I think that is disgusting how they spend what they don't have and then shake down the members for more money . I think they are wanna be televangelists .First off we know the WTBTS has the money , I keep seeing the billion dollar tax statement . That's quite a not for profit organization they have there . When they tell the members they don't have enough when in fact they have more than they need . I do notice alot of times they even get property donated to them so it's not like they are buying everything . They get free labor to build even . Their property is tax free and I do notice they are getting fancy with the building . They even know the choice realestate to develope , jeeze can you say scam .....

    WHAT?!! Rutherford was "testing" Jehovah?

Brother Rutherford said: "Go and see whether it is the Lord’s will for us to return back to Brooklyn."
Brother Rutherford replied. "Let’s make coal the test. You go and order some coal."

Was Rutherford somehow exempt from what Jesus said? http://bible.cc/matthew/4-7.htm

    Matthew 4:7

Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written,'You shall not test the Lord, your God.'" (WEB)

Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God. (ASV)

Jesus said to him, Again it is in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test. (BBE)

Jesus said to him, It is again written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (DBY)

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (KJV)

Jesus said to him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (WBS)

"Again it is written," replied Jesus, "'Thou shalt not put the Lord thy God to the proof.'" (WEY)

Jesus said to him again, 'It hath been written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.' (YLT)

I have always thought that something about this story of Rutherford's "testing" God by ordering coal was suspicious.

It really sounds like Rutherford already knew that coal supplies were available, and then, knowing that in advanced, asked Br. Wise to order some coal as the "test".

When the coal was eventually delivered, Rutherford could say, "See? God is with us!"

The whole thing was a setup, and Ruther-fraud was not above doing such a thing.

I remember back about ...gosh, how long ago was that? Has to be about eight/nine years or more. The JWs wanted to build a new circuit assembly hall as the one in Monroe, NY was in a Hassidic neighborhood, and I guess they were anxious to buy us out??? Not sure of the reasons any more.

At any rate, I can remember a big old discussion one Thursday night where we were all supposed to pledge a certain amount of moola above and beyond our usual contributions to go towards the building of this new and improved Circuit Ass. Hall. They had a couple possible sites under consideration and some drawings of what the place might look like. The years rolled by, the Monroe facility was sold to the local Jewish community, but nary a word was heard about our ambitious new complex. I wonder what happened...if all the extra money donated circuit-wide as well as the money gained from the sale just went to Bethel never to be seen again or what. I've been away so long that I don't know if they announced anything to the congregations or not. I need to remember to ask the next dub I see about it.

Kind of sucks to milk extra money from people and have it disappear into the mists.

Is it just me, or does the coal story make it sound like Rutherford was practicising .... gasp! ... divination?

And that's considered a good thing! LOL. If Rutherford wanted to know what Jehovah wanted, why didn't he just ask him?

Leolaia asked "If Rutherford wanted to know what Jehovah wanted, why didn't he just ask him?" But, he did, Leo. And that's how we came to have Beth Shan and Beth Sarim.
