How much time do they think people have?

So as well as three meetings a week, and preparation for all those 3 meetings, and field service, and the daily text, and your family book study and reading the magazines, and reading any new book or brochure published, and attending assemblies, and hall cleaning, and anything else they can guilt you into, they want you to use some spare time researching pointless questions and then 'share it with others'.

You know its only since I left I realised that all these tasks were deliberately designed to use up every last minute to stop you thinking. When I list them as I have just done I can see why I was under so much stress to get it all done. Make no wonder JW marriages and relationships suffer. Theres no time for anything else.

The only reason i can imagine they have gone monthly is due to profit margins. (Despite the statement a few months ago that they dropped it to concentrate more on the more important bible doctrines in the Watchtower).
When i was in bethel the cost to print an Awake was about 20 cents, and they sold for about 80 cents, quite a good mark up. With the dramatically dropping amount of donations coming out of the field there is no real profit incentive to print it anymore.
I imagine there may also be difficulty getting free labour into bethel in the US these days. The other option could have been to print in Mexico. There is a line to get into bethel, as the standard of living being a bethelite is considerably higher than fending for oneself. That was why the average Mexican used to stay in bethel for 10 years while it was only 2 years in Australia.

They should think about transferring their printing to somewhere in Africa; Niger is currently experiencing a horendous famine - they would be guaranteed more free labour than they needed for as many years as the wanted, all for the price of a bowl of rice and a few innoculations.

January 2006, Awake! "Although certain things will be different, much will remain the same." The very first new issue is one of the "much will remain the same", Front page lead-in article is entitled,"What Will The Future Bring?" page 5-10. Have you ever wondered what kind of world this will be in 10, 20, or more years? The Bible provides solid reasons for us to believe that the best of times are ahead.

Way back in 1969, The Blue Bomb, "THE TRUTH BOOK", asked the very same question. The answer given was that the world would be too dangerous to live in within the next 10 years. Its now 36 years later and they are using their lead-in article to ask the same question.

If the end is "SOON" as they keep repeating, why ask about 10, 20, or MORE YEARS.That seems to me to imply that "SOON" is open-ended and 10, 20, or more years they will be asking the same question. On and on it goes!

The Tower should start selling magazines at Wal-Mart, thus insuring they would be printed in China. Exploited workers in China work 12-hours a day for $3.00. That seems to be the American thing to do. :(

And so does "Time Magazine", and "Readers Digest".

I guess Jehovah is behind these two journals also since they endeavor to publish factual information.

I'm glad for the reduction in waste of natural resources.

I went ahead and read the whole thing. I haven't read anything from WTBTS, consciously, word for word, in about twenty years. I have read a few paragraphs here or there, but this was the first thing I read.

I think the overall "voice" of this article is much different from the WTBTS's voice of my childhood and teen years. There are still a few sentences, here and there, that smack of the feeling, "there is no way to acknowledge the content of this statement without implicitly agreeing with it," but there is much less of that tone.

Is this new voice typical of current WTBTS drivel, or is it unique to a few articles here and there?

Maybe all that 'factual information' will include a reintroduction of the Miracle Wheat? Or the instructions on how to take an 'air bath'?

The upside down questions remind me of those cheezy trivia sections in the newsrags, those answers are upside down. Are they trying to make the magazine 'fun'? To attract and hold the kids they could add a coloring page too!

Sample trivia question;

How many different kinds of butterflies make their annual migration to the sub-sahara?

Is a zebra white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

At what temperature does chocolate melt in your mouth?
