It worked in reverse for me. I recognized my ~~thinking ability~~ apostate tendencies a good ten years before I left the JWs, but tried to surpress them. For years I was telling elders to either :
Counsel me from the bible.
Shut up.
It worked quite well, as most of their "counsel" has nothing to do with the bible.
