I also vote "repression"!
Some of my earliest memories are of repressing my real self to fit into the Witness mold.
"No, you may not play with the little neighbor girl. She is worldly and we don't associate with those people."
That happened when I was about 5, I think. I have a very clear memory of that. And my internal response of "That's stupid!" was repressed and I started down a long path of hypocrisy and repression. {sigh}
