Regarding Candles

This is my first time to be back on the boards in about a week, much to follow up on and I have quite a story to tell regarding the events of the last week. Before I go into that though I would like to make a clarification for all concerned regarding our family business.

While I do appreciate the efforts to offer support personally, it has never been the intent to profit in any way from silentlambs. If you check out the SL website you will see no reference made to what we do for a living nor do I ever intend to. The business we have is a totally seperate issue and when brought up clouds the issue of what SL is trying to accomplish. Even this site has a no advertizing policy and I would never want to have that rule bent or violated in our behalf.

So while we do appreciate the kind thought and concern I must respectfully ask that no one advertize or promote in any way our business in connection with silentlambs. If you see anyone else making an attempt in this regard I would appreciate you reminding them of this policy. If you wish to help, please donate to silentlambs, we need the assistance there and every penny goes for benefiting the victims. I also request that Simon remove any reference to our business from any thread on the forum that has been made or any in the future. I hope you understand our position in this regard, the issues at stake are far to serious to allow dilution for any personal gain.

If anyone has any suggestions for our business please do so privately and I will be glad to respond.

    SL/Bill,

Thanks for being so straight-forward and ethical. Your post clears up a lot. I hope the silentlambs web site gets even more donations, now that you have clarified things.

But you won't mind if we still want to buy some of your wonderful candles?

Look forward to your posts about the trial and conviction!

you sounded like dunscott in the title, I half-expected your post to read:

I was pondering candles today, and especially their content. Any of various natural, oily or greasy heat-sensitive substances, consisting of hydrocarbons or esters of fatty acids that are insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar organic solvents when lit are a beauty to behold.

Certainly, some say that a solid plastic or pliable liquid substance, such as ozocerite or paraffin, originating from petroleum and found in rock layers and used in paper coating, as insulation, in crayons, and often in medicinal preparations is not special in itself. I must respectfully disagree.

Beeswax consists essentially of cerotic acid (constituting the more soluble part) and of myricyl palmitate (constituting the less soluble part). But it is more than the sum of its parts indeed.

Wax has even been mentioned in the bible at Ps. 22:14; 68:2; 97:5; Micah 1:4 respectfully.

References to lighting candles date back to ancient times as early as 3000 BC in Crete and Egypt. Candles are mentioned in Biblical writings as early as the tenth century BC. A fragment of candle from the first century AD has been found in Avignon, France.

The ninetenth century brought the development of patented candlemaking machines, making candles available for the poorest homes. In an attempt to protect the industry, England passed a law forbidding the making of candles at home without purchase of a special licence. At this time, a chemist named Michel Eugene Chevreul made an important discovery. He realized that tallow was not one substance but a composition of two fatty acids, stearic acid and oleic acid, combined with glycerine to form a neutral non-flammable material.

By removing the glycerine from the tallow mixture, Chevreul invented a new substance called "stearine." Stearine was harder than tallow and burned brighter and longer. It is this substance known today as stearin or stearic acid that led to the improvement of candle quality. Stearin also made improvements in the manufacture of wicks possible. It put an end to the constant round of snuffing and trimming wicks once they were lit. Instead of being made of simply twisted strands of cotton, wicks were now plaited tightly; the burned portion curled over and was completely consumed, rather than falling messily into the melting wax.

    Bill,

I think it is a shame that you had to come here to explain yourself. Anyone who has read your website knows that you have not made any conection to your livlihood. My wife and I were happy to mention your candles. They are of first rate quality and fairly priced. You have been most ethical in the manner in which you have conducted yourself. It is too bad we have someone like Fred Hall here, who only does injury to others.

I had respect for you before and it has increased even more. Its too bad that more people aren't as ethical as you are.

That was good, very good in fact, but not quite egregiously pompous enough. And there was a definitely higher snide index in Duns' posts. Face it, you just don't have that in you - which speaks very well in your behalf btw.
