I read it back in late 2000, and although at the time I was in too much of a JW mental fog to make any solid connections, I think the book worked on me in ways that I may not have been completely aware of at the time.

*Spoiler ahead for those who haven't read it*

The end was especially haunting, when Winston gives in to the brainwash - "He loved Big Brother". The emotion that I felt as I read about the complete loss of freedom and autonomy that he experienced at that moment may have been a tipping point for me. I didn't last another year as an active JW after reading that.

Don't recall where I heard this, but maybe back in some lit class---

Rumor was the Orwell named it "1984" because he wrote it in 1948 and thought it would be funny to just transpose the centenary numbers. He also said that he could not imagine society surviving even to that remote year,

    Or so I have hear...

Rich, think of the fine contributions you will be able to make to classroom discussions as a person who has ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with totalitarian mind control! I would love to hear your ANTI-WITNESS!

It would be cool if at some point in the months ahead your class would consider ATLAS SHRUGGED, but I think that is unlikely.
