If your close relatives don't mean much to you anyway then you can write a letter of disassociation explaining the reasons why you no longer wish to be a JW.
If you stand to lose a lot by way of family or friends then fade away slowly. Some JWs first make new friends in the world outside and then leave, so as not to find themselves in a a social vacuum.
Whatever happens, hundreds of thousands have already left the borg and never went back.
Need help with this ..

Man, I would walk away and not give them (the elders, etc.) a damn thing. Not one of them ever put a crumb of food on your table, I'm guessin', and you don't owe anyone an explanation for your actions regarding leaving. Let them figure it out. Hell, it dosen't matter how "nice" you leave the Watchtower Society, cuz they're gonna demonize you anyway. If you need closure and sending them a letter will help you, then fine. Otherwise, you're just wasting your time. Don't straighten the chairs on a sinking ship, get in the life boat! :u)

I agree that you need to evaluate the situation and decide what is best for your family.
Once I am able to help my family to see the need in using their own minds as regards their religious beliefs, I probablly will go for D/A, and then send letters to all friends saying they are more than welcome to come talk with me anytime and that I still view them as my friend. The big exciting withdraw from the Society is appealing, but my fear is that honest people in the hall would see such wild actions as "thats what happens to apostates" and then rely even more on the Watchtower. Leaving quietly, and proving to be a humble and honest person long after you have left gives me the peace of mind that I didn't help keeping anybody there by my own crazy actions.
By the way, I'll take the bound volumes. I got baptised late 99 and have only read some of that older stuff on CD. The pictures would be great! [email protected] -

I'm with Drew on this one. Those who make a big angry scene when they leave just end up reinforcing the Society's stereotype of "apostates" as unbalanced, angry people who went off the deep end. Leave with grace and dignity, and you just may give something for others to think about.
