  The wedding story may have originally been associated with the Samaritan at the well story with as Jesus the groom, but as it stands in the text now it seems the Dionysian water to wine miracle (caled Epiphany celebtaed Jan 6) was incorporated into the Jesus legend as a celebration of his baptism. (perhaps because of the water) The logical place to place in in the story then is just after his baptism. It is still celebrated to this day.

  The author of John self-consciously patterns the narrative of Jesus after the narrative of Moses in Exodus (i.e., with Moses fleeing the Pharisees into a foreign land as Moses fled from Pharaoh into a foreign land, meeting someone at a well), and the language about the "signs" that Jesus performed borrow language directly from the LXX of Exodus. Now...what was the first plague that Moses performed? This was the model of the first sign that Jesus performed, with opposite effect of course.

  His comment "my hour is not yet" would seem to link it with the end of the chapter, when his hour had arrived. The waterpots for ceremonial cleansing would also seem to be an indicator of the comparison that is being drawn between wine, blood, and purification.

  He starts as he finishes, providing a miracle gift that people can drink deeply of.

  Little Toe....I would go further than that....note that v. 6 claims that the water in the jars were the type used in ritual washing "by the Jews", and these were filled with water which Jesus replaced with wine. If wine is a metaphor for Christ's blood, it is noteworthy that it replaces the "water" of Jewish ritual according to the old Law code. And as Moses mediated the rituals of the Law, so does Jesus replace it with the wine (= blood) that he brings forth.
