'I love Jehovah'! What is that supposed to mean?

I'd like someone to explain to me, why so many people come out with the phrase, 'I Love Jehovah'?

What is it that they're meant to be loving?

Jehovah was a pretty nasty war God of the Israelites. He showed little mercy except to a few favourites and his rule seemed to be marked with a lot of destruction, death, punishment and fear. Is that why people say, 'I love Jehovah' out of fear of what he might say otherwise.

I love God, or the creator makes more sense. Even I love Jesus, who seemed one pretty cool character, real or fictional, makes more sense.

But I love Jehovah!!!! Makes no sense to me.

    Anyone care to explain?

When a religion appears as christian and then endevours to promote the worship of jehovah one has to be very careful as this could be judaism in disguise. No serious christian religion promotes the jehovah worship, that's for the Jews to do and it is they that are nothing without jehovah.

I love jehovah basically means you are still under the Mosaic law. Witness also the fact that virtually all JWs are not part of the New Covenent of Christ.

The wt jehovah is the alpha male human, the biggest, the strongest, the smartest, the irrisistable, the ultimately victorious over all competition, allowing no competition to exist. Those that say they love him are acting from the animal pack, tribalism mentality. Gotta wonder what that love really is.

I loved what I was taught about him, but I was always confused in my heart about who he actually is. For instance, I could never understand the war-god persona he had in the Hebrew Scriptures. Scriptures that say stuff like "slaughter man woman and child and feel no mercy" does not sound like the god WT wants me to believe in, or the god I want to believe in. Throughout the Bible there are contradictions over who Jehovah really is. And I'm not just talking about the difference between Old/New Testaments. In Proverbs he is described as a God hating violence, while just a generation before he led David and his men on savage conquests commiting genocide on nearby tribes and ethnicities. He doesn't repay error on successing generations, yet he kills David's firstborn, as well as all the firstborns of Egypt.
In the Greek Scriptures he is refered to in glowing terms by Jesus, but then Revelation quickly brings in the destructive qualities of now 2 dieties: Jehovah and Jesus.

My conclusion: there will never be any shortage of dieties. I do feel that monothiesm is one of the greatest concepts of humankind, but also the most dangerous. You can rationalize any course of action, and that is a very dangerous and animal thing.

I wasn't expecting such deep and meaningful answers.

Swan - 'Mind Control' - Too True. It's something that you hear JWs say and, personally I have always wondered what the hell they mean. I don't think they know. I think it's just something they say to be accepted in 'the group'.

hamsterbait - For someone with the supposed power to make themselves appear so good, he certainly lets his image slip by revealing his character in the OT.

greendawn - I'd never looked at it like that. Really, the JWs are a 'confused' version of Judaism with an attempt to include Jesus Christ in the periphery of their worship of the almighty WTBTS.

Satanus - I don't think it is love. I think the phrase 'I love Jehovah' is a superstitious phrase, to keep this fear some God appeased and to stay in the social club/group.

daniel-p - 'Jehovah's' behaviour is rationalised by people, because he is so powerful and fearsome. I agree. But I don't understand why it is possible to love what the JWs teach about Jehovah. He appears unforgiving and uncaring. Saying he makes it rain on the righteous and unrighteous does not make genocide, and unjust laws right.

"But I don't understand why it is possible to love what the JWs teach about Jehovah."

What I meant by this was being taught Jehovah is a caring, loving God, always willing to listen, blah blah blah.

daniel-p - I understand. Isn't that what twists your mind? You read one thing in the WTBTS propaganda, and then you read another thing in the Old Testament. You have no choice but to try and accept the both....and it remains a permanent doubt. Hence the ritual, superstitious saying of 'I love Jehovah'.

My feelings, as much as i had feelings back then, were not wanting to displease in any way jehovah. Kind of like when you see a cop drive by, you don't wanna screw up somehow. Compare that w being a christian: the bible image of jesus is pretty easy to relate to. No fear there, to speak of. 'Course, the wt attempts to make people afraid of him too. I remember an article about the avenger of blood, where they compared the ot blood avenger to jesus.
