So, best way to identify what I need if I buy an internal replacement would be, what to go to Compaq's website and see if I can order it from them?

    Or to an aftermarket company?

Thanx guys for all the help so far. Or could I just go to Best Buy and get one, bring it home and put it in?

Jeff, if you are going to replace the internal CD drive make sure you can open you case before buying the replacement drive. I purchased a HD for my PC but wound up having to pay for installation after I couldn't get the case off (twern't as easy as I thought). Also buy a static electricity strap to wear and ground yourself while working on your PC, otherwise you could harm the innards of the thing.

Will a new drive come with software to install too? Or will the system recognize it?

It comes with the software. The LG CD drive software also included programs for burning digital media CDS, etc... If your replacing the internal CD drive with the exact same type of drive you probably won't need to install new software.

And dependiing on your OS (Windows 98/2000/XP), you probably won't have to do anything more than turn on the machine, and let the system "find" and install your new device.

If you do get a DVD burner, there will probably be software included that will allow you to activate that feature of the drive. Ditto for a CD Burner....

Thanx for all the suggestions and help.

    I ended up with a Memorex 52x32x52 CdRW .

It works great with a simple USB interface. I was told by a couple people that it would be too slow, but it is just fine. Bot a refurbished one online for less than $40 including shipping.

    Thanx again. Apostates Rock!

    Jeff,

Just to make you feel comfortable with your decision, it sounds to me like your internal CD player's laser is out of alignment. Changing your internal 'Hard Drive' and resetting the operating system is just phone-tech speak for : 'I don't know, try this and see if it works'.

External CD drives are fine. In fact, external Hard Drives are also fine. I used external drives to edit video / film. Which requires a hell of a lot of disk activity.
