Wow DB, thanks for sharing that story. I loved how you highlighted the fact that you have not turned against God and asked her to show you the biblical principle for apostasy. Also, the fact that asking questions should not deem you an apostate is so true. Disagreeing with certain actions on the part of a multi-billion dollar corporation and asking them to be accountable for their actions, is NOT apostasy.

I wish my mother would even entertain the notion that it is ok to ask questions, discuss, debate, religion. You are fortunate that she listened enough to allow a crack to open in her "the WTBS says so, so it is so" armour. Also, sounds like you made good ground in gently helping her to see that they are not tantamount to God himself, in fact, just another manmade religion. You did this by letting her come to her own conclusions. Very respectful DB.

    Hugs from Jez

I'm glad that her brain and heart are both engaged,

That alone makes her dangerous as far as the WTS is concerned. Bug

Congratulations! What wonderful news! It gives me hope for my mom. She's been in about 50 years now...at 80 years old I can't imagine what life would be like for her if she did all of a sudden see...it's all she's really ever known.

Thanks for all your comments. The hard work isnt over and I am resigned to the fact that she will continue to be a witness ( to an extent I even support it in that she needs her religion to fulfil her sociological needs. She still displays traits of merely accepting what is dished out by the WTBTS but I have now a conversation I can remind her of which she agreed that 1) she wouldnt shun me for asking questions and 2) doesnt think that I am an apostate. That is good enough for me because when and if I should ever be disfellowshipped she will be prepared for it. Again thanks everyone. DB74

Excellent. I reckon you handled it very well, staying away from any emotionalism and just sticking to solid facts that you have really done your homework on. You mother seems a reasonable person and rather untypical of many dubs who tend to get all hot under the collar at anything even remotely 'apostate'.

Hello. I'm quite new but have been perusing this site for months. I'm certainly not here to judge (one of my probs w/ WT), but will someone please explain to me why it seems many here go running to beliefs and practices that are hardly improved over the WT (e.g., celebrating christmas)? The only explanation I can figure is that such individuals aren't necessarily interested in Christian truth, only reacting like the tightly coiled spring suddenly sprung, doing whatever. ???

Hi and welcome. I have actually spent a lot of time searching for Christian Truths; especially this scripture has a profound significance to me since I left the Watchtower religion.

    Romans 14:4-6 (English Standard Version)

    English Standard Version (ESV)

4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master [ a ] that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.

Well, maybe... just maybe.... people want to figure things out for themselves. Seriously, celebrating holidays and birthdays does no harm (and in many ways serves a beneficial purpose), so why not let people sort out their own beliefs and values, without judging them?
