Here they cost about £5 ($8) a pack of 20. Rolling tobacco is cheaper, but a lot more effort.

It varies from state to state. In Ohio, they're $4-6 a pack. The ones I like are $6, the ones I can tolerate are $4. (There are even some $3 and unders, but good heavens, even smokers should have standards!!!)

I don't smoke, but I'm pretty sure they're around $9 plus sales taxes (15% in Newfoundland) up here, give or take. The government keeps putting more taxes on them to raise the prices and make smoking less attractive. I don't think it's working - smokers who want to smoke will pay for the cigarettes, no matter how expensive they get.

And AlmostAthiest, sorry about the failed attempt to quit, you're certainly not the only one who's had trouble kicking the habit, but I have every confidence that, when you're good and ready for it, you'll be able to give it up for good. Keep us posted on your adventures in quitting smoking!!

Sorry AA, I'm sure this is not the kind of thing you want to hear, but it is so close to my heart right now.

Sorry to hear about that! If I didn't listen to this kind of stuff, I'd be a bigger fool than I already am. Thanks for the info.

Awe shucks Dave, sorry to hear you've gone back to the ciggies. I know from experience it takes several tries at quiting to be successful so in my book you're almost there.

I found the nicotine to be the controller, so using the patch is a wonderful idea. The gum was good for me because whenever the desire for a cigarette hit me, I had something else to get and do. The impulse was "get a cigarette and smoke it, feel better". The gum replaced that with "get a piece of gum, chew it, feel better". It was working.

You've got the clue right there, find something to do where you can't smoke while doing it. I know I smoked out of pure boredom so I had to make myself find other things to do now I'm so busy and my lungs feel so much better I couldn't stand the thought of smoking again.

But then I REALLY WANTED TO QUIT! I think you have to really want it to make it happen. Good luck Dave on your next attempt, you'll stop when you are ready.
