One of he saddest things about his dementia, was the loss of that wonderful, brilliant mind.
Being around your loved one with dementia or Alzheimers tears up those who witness it. It's like living with a different person and you want so bad to communicate with them and cannot. You were lucky your dad could still funtion a bit in that area.
Mulan....I was always impressed how your whole family "saw the light" about the 'truth'. A big family you have and ALL came out. Maybe your dad had a gene in him he passed to you all...that being a gift to see bullshit. In your case....it took awhile to click........but it finally clicked.
