1 Corinthians 5:11 (NWT) ~ But now I am writing you to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.

To obtain by force, intimidation, or undue power. Isn't that exactly what shunning is? Isn't the threat of losing friends, family and loved ones a form of extortion, if the only way you can keep these relationships is by maintaining a certain accepted standing among JWs?

I didn't realize until today the relationship between the words "extort" and "torture". In the case of shunning and being ostracized by family members and friends, it certainly fits the bill. Since we're able to establish that JWs who practice shunning and the WTS which encourages shunning are, in fact, guilty of extortion, why not enlighten JWs that when they practice shunning, they are jeopardizing their relationship with God?

Extortion is a criminal offense , which occurs when a person obtains money, behaviour, or other goods and/or services from another by wrongfully threatening or inflicting harm to this person, reputation, or property. Euphemistically , refraining from doing harm is sometimes called protection. Extortion is commonly practiced by organized crime groups.

Blackmail is one kind of extortion -- specifically, extortion by threatening another's reputation with the disclosure of incriminating statements (true or false) about him. Even if it is not criminal to disclose the information, it constitutes extortion to demand money or other consideration not to disclose it. [1]

Extortion is distinguished from robbery . In robbery, the offender steals goods from the victim whilst threatening him with immediate force. In extortion, the victim willingly turns the goods over to avoid a threatened later violence or other harm.

The term extortion is often used metaphorically to refer to usury or to price-gouging, though neither is legally considered extortion. Libertarians and Objectivists consider taxation a form of legalized extortion. Some feel that others are abusing the legal system in their own extortion schemes, threatening to sue (for instance over alleged trademark infringement or defamation) in cases where the prospective defendant did no wrong, but feels compelled to settle and make a payment anyway to avoid expensive litigation.

This is EXACTLY what they do to people!

The word is harpax "those who seize, take by force, plunder", and Paul also uses it in 1 Corinthians 6:10, as the kind of person who would not inherit God's kingdom. It is used in Matthew 7:15 to describe the wolves-in-sheep's clothing Christians who are really "ravenous" (harpages) inside. The force used to seize one's time, money, quality of life can be through threat, hence the sense of extortioner...

Wow. The whole JW belief system is based on extortion, then!!

If JWs don't go Door-to-Door™ and engage in the Preaching Work™, there is the threat of destruction at Armageddon™.

If JWs don't donate to the WTS in terms of time and effort [the Can You Do More guilt trip], they are led to believe that they will not be eligible for Everlasting Life™ in Paradise™.

If JWs accept a blood transfusion in order to live longer, they are taught, and thus, believe they will be destroyed at Armageddon™ anyway.

If JWs are non-compliant with the directives of the Faithful and Discreet Slave™, they are taught, and thus, believe they will be destroyed at Armageddon™.
