When did you realize that you were part of a cult?

Not until I got far enough away to look back and see it with some perspective. There are a few a few trigger words that always elicit an immediate negative reaction with JWs. Two that immediately come to mind are cult and apostate. Even after watching that infamous Dateline interview and agreeing that there was a serious problem exposed, I turned to my son and said "we're NOT a cult" - that's just ridiculous.

I can now see it for what it really is - a cult - but aren't all religious groups really?

Not until I began looking into Scientology. I said to myself, "Damn, they're a pretty sh***y, scary cult! Oh wait, sounds a bit like the JWs..."

Not when I first got online back in '99, because I was in chatrooms and the info wasn't there. It was after I discovered the forums.....like this one.......that I realized the WTS is definitely a cult and has most of the symptoms of an abusive "mate."

...It took me until I was in my 30s to figure it out again, especially after the "We Are Not a Cult" issue of the Awake.

Yea, if you have to write an article on why your not a cult, then maybe you are one...

There were a couple of red flags for years but I ignored them and carried on hoping I would finally "get it" and would stop doubting. But it was 2 years ago when I came on line

When you look at all the control they have over people, especially when it comes to personal choices like who you want for spouse, that's when you realize that it's only a high control group or a cult.

If the truth sets a person free, why are the JW's so tangled up?

When Farkel told me.......I had a thread on how I was sick of Witnesses being referred to as a "CULT". I thought it was inaccurate and demeaning and I was wrong. The evidence is obvious. JW'S ARE A CULT!!!!!

Couldn't use the word 'cult' for a very long time after leaving. Just didn't want to think that way. When I first came to this board in NOV 2004 I still could not accept the use of that term. Somewhere along the way I began to see that nothing short of a cult would impose such rigid legalism on others, and control information so tightly. I gradually began to accept that it was a cult.

Today I freely tell others that I was in a cult from childhood till the age of 48. I hope someone along the way either gets out of one, or never gets in one, due to my comments.
