Has communism really fallen? That doesn't seem to be the case. China a country that contains a fifth of the world's population is the new motherland of communism, after Russia went capitalistic (or so it seems), there are several other communist countries like Vietnam, Cuba, many ex Soviet states, and there are powerful communist sympathisers elsewhere in Burma, South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela etc.

No doubt communism lost much ground but it certainly hasn't totally fallen.

After it 'fell', it changed it's form from a solid to a vapor. It has become kinder and softer. In this form, this is much harder to detect. It has suffused the minds and hearts of many idealistic and pragmatic influencial people in social fields such as the media and scholastics. It is alive and well.

LOL... Communism and Socialism are alive and well. Just attend a California sponsored University and you'll get an eyefull.

Has communism really fallen? Well, I'll go out on a limb here and say that IMO the world has never seen communism. Sure, we've seen socialist dictatorships but not communism in its purist form.

So, looking at current affairs we see that, yes, such socialist dictatorships are alive and well.

BTW you could have added Cambodia to the list where a former Khmer Rouge leader is the "Prime Minister" but in effect has gathered so much power to himself that he could be called a dictator. Right now it's a crime in Cambodia to criticsie the government and many are languishing in jails for doing just that.

Also, a correction if I may, you refer to Vietnam (correctly Viet Nam) as communist. True, it was communist but after centralised decision-making as regards to agriculture failed in the 1980s, it has become a socialist country. It allows one political party but private enterprise is alive and well (and so is corruption!) and it'd be hard to see it 'on the ground' as being communist. BTW it's my favorite part of the world - simply gorgeous! Mrs Ozzie and I love it intensely.

The world is not a safe place for pure communism.

I also think that expressions like the fall/collapse/defeat/end of communism do not describe the truth. Communism is still quite powerful.

Ozzie you are right Campuchea is also communist as is neighbouring Laos. In all 1.8 billion people live under communist governments.

Even though I sympathise with their call for social justice I strongly dislike their radical anti god, anti morality attitude and their overagressive, oppressive, unreasonable, dictatorial nature.

Fascism is alive and well too. Just look at the Republicans and the neocons behind it.
