Lo' and Behold - I start hearing Kingdom Melodies in the coffee shop.....

I was peacefully reading an old copy of Stephen Cox' article "Can the Truth survive the Internet", and all of a sudden I realize that the instrumental music playing is the d*mn Kingdom Melodies. It was actually pretty good. IT was that instrumental cd released sometime back with a lot of harp, piano, and woodwinds in it. Not too bad - you had to listen close to pick out the KM under the instruments.

I started to go to the counter and request they took it off on the grounds that it was 'offensive' to me. Then I thought better of it. As a witness I always felt uncomfortable around Christian music [now I love it], and I realize how closed-minded I was with that. So I did not request that it was taken off. Besides, no one but a former witness [or current one] would have any idea what it was.

I know how it got there too. The coffee bar had employed a witness sister for a while, and she must have brought it in, prob to counteract the Christmas music they often played. When she left the cd stayed. She prob thinks it will help to convert someone someday.

Anyway, I was proud that my mind is now wide enough to accept listening to it without triggering any anger.

I just wish I could sneak a copy of Amazing Grace into the hall. That would give a start when they were preparing to sing Kingdom Melody # 14.

I am pleased you put up with it, we often forget what we say about the witnesses and do it ourselves (yes me included)

It's hard to shake the old behaviors, but it sure feels good when we do.

Sometimes I find myself humming some of the km's and try to think of some other religious songs. Only to find that the only one that I kind of know is Amazing Grace and one from the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". All of my life I have been taught that the other gospel songs are so bad although they are beautiful melodies and now I don't know any of them. Guess I have some learning to do.

    JW's are sneaky like that.

I can imagine your surprise when you realized what was happening. It's great that you handled it so cooly. I don't think I could have.

So I guess the subliminal messages didn't take hold of you.

When I first left borgdom I was quick to eliminate anything that would allow me to think well of the organization that had so snowed me over the past decades. Now I somewhat regret that in that I have an opener mind that would not be so offended by those things now.

I always actually loved those songs - and someday I might let myself actually love them again. They are just music after all and I am slowly forgetting most of the words anyway. Blondie one time said that 'Good music, is just good music' or something to that effect. The KM's are ok.

I do wish that other religious tunes flourished in my head. Just never had much opportunity to know them. I listen to them now, but don't know the story behind them or the words mostly.

But open minds rarely get closed again. Mine won't!

Stephen Cox' article "Can the Truth survive the Internet",

    Is he a former witness?

I know its off subject but I'm always looking for a good reading material.
