Are you copying Kathy Bates in the "Fried green tomatoes" movie? She swung a mean sledgehammer!
I did something similar in my last house- made a 4 ft doorway to a dark living room. It sure made a difference. It's just common sense and a some good tools- god luck!

Update on the 'hole in the wall' project.
The doorway is finished, the pantry is in, the shelves are up. The painting is done. The staining is done. First step in a remodel of the kitchen is complete. Starting on the rest will take all summer I suppose. I do things as I can afford them, cash. So it will be slow going. But the vision is my mind and I will push on to it's fullfillment.
