shunning has its place? Taken out back and stoned? Is this the United States or freaking IRAN? Where's all the love and understanding at the hall? Oh that's right it disappeared a long time ago (assuming it was there in the first place).

[in the voice of the Villager #3 from Holy Grail] er...'cause...because they're made of wood?

The answer is because the religion is unloving.

In my opinion, there are situations that warrant shunning, but I would never dream of claiming that cutting my brother out of my life was an act of love for him. It was an act of stabilizing my own life, it was done out of self-interest—I cannot function well with him and his drama as a part of my life. Any claim to another motive would be beyond insanity.

And I am shunned by those who are self-interested, as well. There is no other explanation for it. It is unloving.

    Respectfully,
    AuldSoul

Death to the Pixies and Oroborus21,

To keep from sidetracking this thread, I started another for you two: BIAS!? On a DISCUSSION forum? Perish the thought...

Please direct your comments regarding bias to that thread so as not to sidetrack this one further on that particular topic.

    Oroborus21,

On all counts, I agree with your biases on this issue. I thought that was one of the most finely expressed treatments of this draconian practice I have ever read.

    Respectfully,
    AuldSoul

hugs kitty, i'm not shunned by my parents but i am by my self righteous pioneer child.

the more i'm shunned the angrier i get and the more determined i am to stay away from the wtbs !

it is an ineffective tool...but wait! its not designed to get people to repent..its designed so that the society can say " LOOK! we put sinners out of our congregations! We dont associate with sinners! We're Gods clean organization!"

always reminds me of the scripture about the rotting bones in whitewashed graves.. they dont care about whats inside..just that it looks pretty to the world that we're told to be no part of.

(((candi))) i'm sorry about your child shunning you.

i must say however, whoever invented the shunning policy for the borg knew what they were doing. it's a basically a control tool.

''We have the ability to kick you out, but we can also take away all that you love, so you'll be back sooner or later.''

the first time i ever got dsf'd was at sixteen for dating a worldy boy and smoking. i ended up getting reinstated in less than a year....not because i was repentant about what i had done, but because i was SIXTEEN and NEEDED A FAMILY.

    luv, jojo
