What exactly do you mean by retirement? I am 54 and do hope to 'retire' from the outfit I work for now, but I do not intend to quit working. I would like to start a second career whether it is selling real estate or working part time down at Home Depot. I really do not relish the idea of sitting in my rocking chair on the front porch till I die. DO YOU?

    I agree 'amused'

I want to work til the day I die. It may be because I take after my workaholic dad, or the midwest culture that I was raised in, but I really enjoy working.

I used to work with a guy in retail who was over 80 years old. All the customers loved him! He sold more stuff than anyone! Our boss once asked him why he didn't retire.
"I did," was his reply. "But, I noticed that all my friends started dying after they retired. So, I figure, you want to live, you gotta work."
Our boss just looked at him and smiled. "Well then, get back to work."

I've alway thought about that. I guess even in my retirement, I'll be doing something. But, I have no idea what. Dear Lord, if you're listening, please don't let me end up as a door greeting at Wal-Mart.

My wife's great Uncle took out a five year loan on a new car back in 2001- he'll have it paid off this year in time for his 96th birthday- he finally cut back to 32 hrs a week at his job. Florida renewed his drivers license for 5 more years ,too. He retired at 65 for a couple years ,then he went back to work fulltime. He was bored with retirement. Not many can work like he did, as their heath won't permit them to work past 65.

Why are we worried about this anyway? The New System will be here "within the next 7 years" according to a local bonehead elder in my area, rendering the age of retirement moot.

You should get him to write that down and sign it for you.... that way in seven years you can show it to him and say: "Ahem"

every action has a reaction. if we expect to live longer its not surprising that society will expect us to work longer.

the times they keep on a changin'

Let's not indulge in negativity about this, if it becomes true.

It's not, "I'm so sad I have to work",

    it's, "I'm happy that I don't have to get weak and die" ( !!!)

My dear Mother decided to become a Travel Agent at age 68. Twenty-two students began the college course and only two completed it.

She immediately opened her own shop-front and built it up successfully over the ensuing 16 years.

When she was in her early '80's I recall her telling me that she was going to visit the local retirement village to pitch to the "old folk"

She sold the business at a fair price just before her 85th birthday.

Her father was appointed National Sales Trainer for a large Australian electrical firm (Godfreys) when he was 77..
