Well, I'm getting closer and closer to turning my life upside down and breaking away from my 43 years of conservative living.

What happens if I go for it?

    Any risk experiences out there?

The risk I want to take is leaving banking, living a much more bohemiam life, maybe work as a waiter or bartender or something, go to school, travel, work on my furniture art, write, read, LIVE.

AAAACK. I make good money but I am not living enough.

    Help me OBI wan kanobi.

I want to see Ireland and England so bad, but I want to like live there for 6 months and really see it.

im rambling now, i think i am delirious, should I become a drag queen?

if i become a drag queen should my drag name be Mona Lott?

I don't know about the drag queen idea. Do you have any idea how expensive size 18 tiaras are these days?

I took a travel risk several yrs ago. It's one of the best things I ever did for myself, and I'll always have great memories of it!
Since I was a child,I was fascinated with the Society(yuk, hate that name lol) Islands. I was able to financially realize my dream. So off I went. Took 3 planes and beaucoup travel time.I hit some of the Tahitian Islands.
I didn't want to go the touristy route. So I stayed in a few 'out of the way' places. My French improved greatly there.I found the Tahitians to be the most laid back,easy-going group of people I ever met! I remember joining a bunch just sitting on the road, trying to communicate in pidgen English and French, drinking Hinano beer.
Later I was hungry,so a few of us walked into the treeline and one of the men shimmied up a tree.He threw down a coconut to me. And proceeded to open it with his TEETH! Seems there was often music among the groups I'd find. So much more, but a trip I'll never forget.
Go Ahead! Take the risk! Risks can end up as very mind expanding, learning experiences. Not to mention FUN!
I wanted to stay there. I had my atty sending my assets to the Banc d'Indochine.......I should have. That's my only regret today.

    GO FOR IT!

The best times in life come from taking chances. Keep this in mind Joel, you can always return to the boring working world grind. You could always claim temporary insanity, whatever, but it will always be there.

How bad do you want to do this? Really, how bad?
If you have confidence in yourself and that you can support yourself (even if you have to be a beach bartender or something) you'll be able to experience real living without following someone else's time schedule.
If I had stayed at my decent paying, albeit, tedious and restrictive job I would have gone crazy with depression. I made the leap and will never, ever return to working for anyone else. I am now living my life exactly the way I want to. I'm a food writer who does web design on the side and last year I was wined and dined in France as part of my "work". Alain Ducasse's staff treated me like I was a celebrity (you should see my office, a computer sitting in my tiny little kitchen, ha ha). I never know what's going to happen next, but it's possible because I have time to pursue things most people chained to a 9-5 job can't do.
All kinds of things have been happening since I broke away from the traditional route. I get all kinds of gourmet treats sent to me from around the world, Businessweek did an article about me all because of an email I sent one of their columnists about one of her columns. I've dined with Madonna's family at their winery and am able to call her dad by his nickname.
It took a few years, but I make more money doing what I love than I ever could have at the airlines. And, I don't work full time, only when I want to. Just recently, I emailed Emeril Lagasse's editorial manager at Emerils.com. She invited me to become one of the regular feature writers. I'm sorry to brag, but I absolutely love what I do!

If I ever do another column or series of articles it will be to inspire others to go after a real life and quit the rat race. It's been the most fulfilling aspect of my life and I cringe when I hear the horror stories of mother's missing their kids first steps or people only living for the weekend.

Go for it, you won't regret it and you can always find work, you know that, don't you?

    Good luck,

    Anne

    Hi joelbear.

We took a risk a few years ago by accepting overseas jobs. Alan was a bit reluctant, but I desperately wanted to go. Even though it didn't last the five years we intended, it was the best thing we ever did. We got to live in Europe for 15 months, during which time we did as much traveling as we possibly could and made some wonderful friends. It was a very enriching experience.

If I didn't have children to get through college right now, I'd be on Alan's case to move back to Europe. I hope we'll get to some day.

Another risk I took about seven years ago was to decide to sell my house and move from Colorado to Oregon to be with Alan, whom at that point I'd never met in person. :-)

I say, go for it! Life's too short not to do the things you long to do. As Joseph Campbell said, find your bliss.

PS If you decide to be a drag queen, I want to know where you're performing! :-)

    joel,

i say go for it! i'm in the same situation, i'm about to disrupt my cozy little life too. maybe we can do an online support type thing? i keep asking myself "am i totally nuts??" and the answer i think is YES! but the chance for adventure is too enticing. i know i just have to go for it or i'll end up miserable. i took my first step by getting out of a not so great relationship and moving into my own place. now the next phase begins.....wish me luck, i will keep the board updated on how this all goes. i hope you do too! joel, we all must do what makes us happiest! so go for it! i'm right there with ya

    Joel,

I'm with the others that risk-taking can be quite worthwhile.

However, I'm gonna ask what nobody else has so far: Where's Mitch in all this? Are you going abroad without him? Is he tied to his job or can/will he come with? (Or did I miss something when I was gone from the board this past week?)

    And finally,

are you auditioning at a club near me?
