I find it hard to be sympathetic to polygamists who are offended by the HBO comedy.

For me the idea of Mormon Polygamy so disturbing, that I cringed when the California Zephyr (Amtrak) crossed the Colorado/Utah border traveling into Utah, I immediately got the creeps. It was just eery.

I actually wonder what all the fuss is about.

If someone is crazy enough to want the challenge that comes with maintaining a plurality of relationships and households, then why stop them?

It seems a little more honest than multiple hidden affairs.

Little Toe, I might agree if Mormons were equal opportunity polygamists. But they aren't. Only men can have multiple spouses in Mormon polygamy

. If people want to practice polymory, then let them. But this is not polymory and not all wives are willing participants in Mormon polygamy. Some young girls as young as 12 are forced to marry men who are in their 60's that already have several wives.

I was actually reading an article from MSNBC yesterday about polygamy and Mormons.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11548419/

In Salt Lake City, a judge was removed from the bench recently for having three wives, even though bigamy (or in this case, polygamy) is illegal in Utah (hmm, home of the Mormons, imagine that). Apparently, he's married to three sisters and has 32 kids between them all, and he was married by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a fundie sect of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (Wait, how the hell did he manage to get married three times in a state that prohibits plural marriages??)

I agree with FHN, the concept of polygamy is creepy. Really, no woman is going to want to share her husband with other women, that's just not right, and like FHN said, not all of the women involved in plural marriages are there voluntarily.

They might not promote polygamy anymore, but just the thought of it still makes me really glad that I'm not a Mormon.

Yeah, from what I gather, they don't have a sense of humor either.

This judge, if it is the same one in the local paper, lives and holds the place of judge in a small comunity in southern Utah on the border of Arizona.

A well known old town where all are poligamists. Being on the border, if the Arizona authorities were to be seen coming the whole comunity would walk over into Utah and the same if Utah authorities were seen they would cross over into Arizona. To avoid them.

This is a very old comunity and it looks like Utah Is finally cracking down on them.

These poligamists are experts in using the systems in place to feed and clothe the poor and single mothers.

    Maybe that is the reason.

Mormons are like the ancient Hebrew (later became 'jews'), fellas that were horny little bastards that came up with the novel idea of havin little hot concubines so the little bastards could have more sons if'n the wify had a dried up ol' prunlike uterus and they can a keep on carryin on the family line of horny baby Israelites is what I'm thinkin.

I'm thinkin of startin my own church where women can have all the men they want for husbands but the men must be faithful and sleep only with his wife and hasta take turns with the other fellas. The men can even keep doing the secular work while she spits out babies too. There will be an initiation rite required by me for all women joinin to be "purified"....if ya know whada mean. Anyone wanna git started?

I saw a talk show about this once. The 2nd, 3rd and so on "wives", who are not legally married, are legally single. So they draw foodstamps, section 8 and afdc as long as they are eligible. They also get medicaid for their children.

Those remote towns like the ones you mentioned are very oppressive to women, teen girls and little girls. They are like prisoners and have no rights. The kids and sometimes older women have no choice in whether or not they will participate in polygamy.
