The Keys to Happiness, and Why We Don't Use Them

    From: http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20060228/sc_space/thekeystohappinessandwhywedontusethem

"If you are looking for something to complain about, you are absolutely certain to find it," Easterbrook told LiveScience. "It requires some effort to achieve a happy outlook on life, and most people don't make it. Most people take the path of least resistance. Far too many people today don't make the steps to make their life more fulfilling one."
As Abraham Lincoln once said, "Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

I think it is as easy as saying, I am not a victim.

    What are your thoughts?

I don't know if it's genetic or just learned behaviour, but everyone in my family has had problems with depression. Even when we're not feeling depressed we tend to sit around and bitch most of the time.

I used to think a believe just like that...

Till I actually became a victim...

Depression is genetic. When people say something "runs in families" thats what it means. Doesn't mean that everyone that gets the gene in a family gets depression, some may just carry the gene and pass it on to the next generation. But because you have depression doesn't mean that you can't be happy. There are lots of tools and meds out there that can get you through this and back into health and happiness.

And it runs in my family too!

I was NEVER depressed (clinically) about anything in my life EVER.

I was happy as a bug in a rug... despite life's curves.

Till my wife cheated on me... I've never been happy since. Five years of pure misery with no end in sight.

Now I see why people kill themselves.

My point was, you don't have to stay a victim. We all are victims of something or someone from time to time. I just refuse to remain a victim or to give that kind of control to anyone. When I move on "my" happiness returns.

Well you can move on but depression does move with you and i do believe a family history of depression and abuse will follow you. Some scares never heal , they may fade but are still present .

Genetic makeup has a lot to do with depression . I have a long line of depression in my family and the line continues.

I'm sure genetics plays some role.

It's one thing to say I was a victim, it's another to say I am a victim.

    Also

I think it's interesting to note that many great theologians (M. Luther, C. H. Spurgeon and others) suffered from depression. So spirituality seems not to have effect.
