However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots. Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.
No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq. And also.This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages...

When speaking to Persians* they are very mystified as to our interest in their history and particularly the way we in the west have bent things out of shape, time and context. It seems to me much bible thought came from Babylon/Persia. Duelism (the concept of good vs Evil) was taken from there, possibly during their captivity. Also the tales of Gilgamesh came from Sumner (southern Iraq), which predates the biblical flood account by 900 or so years.
Side track: For a while I did carpentry work for an arab christian journalist (Yassar Arafats lot) and he was amased when I expained JW beliefs to him. They in the Fatah party have family connections reaching back and linking them directly to Jesus and his disciples families - something not imagined by people bought up to think that the temple fire of 70CE™ destroyed all connections with them.
