Eagle-1: Because they are fake. Couldn't agree more. As a matter of fact, the bigger the "Christian" they are, the less I trust them.

From an atheist perspective, no belief is any better or worse than any other, although personally the more extreme the display is the less comfortable I am.

At times I have had to go along with people for the sake of being polite.. getting invited to have dinner with a family and then before the meal they "invite" me to hold hands with them and pray to their god. fine, I just hold their friggin' hands and think happy thoughts while they engage in their ritual behavior. where's the harm. besides what else should I do, laugh at them? get offended? be rude? politely decline?

As for them appearing fake, my theory is thus: they're not acting natural, so they don't seem genuine. They may be as sincere in their primitive belief as any other believer, it's all in how you perceive them.

    free2beme,

    Here's how it works:

You see a David Copperfield show.

The first time you see the show, his delightful assistants enter a box, the box blows up, and the delightful assistant appears 100 foot away.

    You are amazed !!!

    THEN...

You meet the delightful assistant identical twins in a bar, and they explain everything.

Some time later you see a friend who has seen the show, and is amazed by the escaping / teleporting delightful assistant.

You inform your friend of the identical twins you met, and they think you're only saying this to spoil their experience. The harder you press, the harder they push their fingers in their ears.

You then spend the rest of the evening listening to your friend tell everyone in the bar how David Copperfield is incredible. Because he can make his delightful assistant transport 100 feet to escape an exploding box.

    That's how it works.

very interesting. But I must confess. I'm a Christian and find myself very uncomfortable when surrounded by overt/ultra Christians. I don't know if it's fake but i think sometimes over the top to make a point or a proclamation. It's actually been on my mind a lot lately. If I am wrong in my discomfort...

I know they often suffered from mental illness, but I also think that more then any, they suffered from a serious lack of faith in their religion

I think alot of them are trying to make up for other areas of their lives that are lacking. I've known many sisters who become "ultra Christian" when their hubbies run off and leave them. To me, with Jehovah being a male figure, He replaces the husband in these women's lives to a great extent and that's how they deal with it. One sister (who had been in 'the world' doing major drugs etc) told me quite openly that she had to be a "bit overboard" because it was the "only way she could stay in the Truth".

Ultra Christian : Someone who is extreme in their religious following of the Christian faith. Perhaps someone who claims to have seen God, spoken to God or in some cases, think they are God. Someone who prays openly, often, and not just in a normal manner. Perhaps asking strangers to pray with them, saying that someone needs prayer in almost all situations (even when simply ordering off a menu). Someone who freaks out with anything not Christian (Oh my God, it's Harry Potter books and we must burn them). So on and so forth, get the idea?

Well my definition is somebody who tries to follow Christ - and Christ did not "" freaks out with anything not Christian"" etc so that is why they sound so fake - becasue it is not Christ-like

In business dealings, I learned at an early age that if a person felt they had to tell me they were a christian and so I should trust them, that they were not to be trusted.

A ""true"" christian does not feel that urge but they are almost always helpful and honest.

I am helpful and honest and I am not a christian. I may be an agnostic, I am not sure.

I don’t know about fake, but I do know that these sort of people are dangerous.

If they ever get into any sort of power, that is when the ‘witch burning’ begins, they worry me.

Actually, when one thinks about it, if one believes in god and satan, then one has to believe that religion is satans greatest triumph, it has caused more harm and death than anything else.
