I've been wanting to do this for some time now. It does look like it would be a fun hobby.

Thanks for the link, good info!

No offense to you fellow 'postates....BUT...

Here is a topic worthy of at least looking at...something positive...something to possibly help you with a wholesome diversion from the WTS pain we've all endured...and almost no one even looked at it...I'm AMAZED.

If a topic on sex, perversion, drugs, innuendo, tits, ass, drunkeness, sleeping around, politics, or mental illness is posted you eat it up like candy (or should I say crack?)...

I understand "those" topics are highly enticing...I read them and contribute to them too...BUT, for gawds sakes people...If you're ever going to break the stanglehold the WTS has on your psyche...you need to replace it with something positive, fun and worthwhile... instead of forever wallowing in agaony over what's been done to us.

I guess you can lead a horse to water...and that's about it.

I'm not condemning anyone...gawd knows JWD helped/and continues to help me out...but you need to start forging a new life for yourselves... or risk becoming a wierdo!

More threads on how to actually go out and make a lifed, have a life and live a life need to be discussed. Time's a wasting...and there's a whole world out there to explore...go for it!!!

    I tried.

Wow - this sounds really cool, especially maybe for folks who are into orienteering but have no local groups to join. I suspect it would also be great for discovering 'off the beaten track' places that don't get mentioned in tourist brochures. Even in a relatively tiny place like the UK, it's so easy to miss some really beautiful places.

I'd love to have the time and money to do it. Maybe when I retire (if I haven't worked myself to death trying to build a decent pension!)

    "or risk becoming a wierdo!"

lol, did you really just say that in a thread you started on geocaching?

I mean, I guess I understand the attraction, what with Easter being just around the corner....

I have come across some websites about Geochaching, but never could quite understand how it worked. Is it just like regular fortune hunting or metal detecting? On one of the sites it listed a location in my old hometown in Kentucky with a date of 1950 something, but isnt this a relatively new hobby? Also do the people who own the property give their consent for you to dig on their property?

"Also do the people who own the property give their consent for you to dig on their property?"

NO! That's the cool part of it; it blends geekiness with badass outlawism.

In a nutshell...it's using a GPS to go on a "scavenger hunt" of sorts...

You usually find a container (rarely does one dig) with a log book and some trinkets that you usually exchange as a courtesy. If you take one, then you leave one...It's almost always on publicly accesible land.

Here in Colorado a lot are on 4x4 trails and hiking trails and scenic viewpoints...so half the fun is just getting there...

If you looked at the site in the FAQ section... it goes over this. There are no hard and fast "rules"...it's purely for fun and there are myriads of variations of this global scavenger hunting.

You'd be surprised... there's hardly a spot on the globe that doesn't have some sort of geocache...

If you've got kids...and want something fun to do with them (beats the hell out of Family Study), that they can actually participate in and really learn something from (trust me they'll look forward to doing this).... then, this is YOUR hobby.

So you've started geocaching already u/d?

How long for and have you found anything really good yet?

I haven't actually done it yet...It's the tail end of winter here in the Rockies... but I've done a lot of research and my kids and I are getting geared up for Spring...

We're going to Akumal Mexico and there are geocache's there... they're everywhere.

This looks to be a very promising hobby. I have a GPS...and a 4x4 and kids... so it'll be fun. The kids are already excited and doing their own research... (never got that response out of them with the Family Study BS).

I've really done a lot of reading on the website...and some discussion forums.

I want to start my own geocache... I think it'd be cool.
