JW murder in Kane County Illinois

  I was driving to work today and the news came on...I heard the name Betty Whitten being charged for murder on 2 counts. I knew the name but wasn't sure at that point if it was the Betty Whitten I knew from Libertyville, Illinois...Then her disabled daughter was mentioned, we called her "Kiki". "Kiki" had been stabbed by her mother Betty Whitten. Betty then put her dead daughter in her car and drove to St. Charles, Illinois. Betty saw a cop, and panicked. She then tried to crash her car, which she succeeded. "Kiki" was already dead, and Betty had a cut on her head. Betty is in jail on $2,000,000 dollar bond, and is being charged for murder. If you go on line and google Chicago Tribune, etc, you can read the article(s).

  I knew this family and I was so stunned. I am only assuming they were still Jehovahs Wittnesses, but if not, they once were. Betty's husband was an elder. I remember Betty Whitten coming up to me at a funeral we were at back in 1990. This kid had murdered his parents. Betty came up to me at the funeral, and said "Now, don't you go doing something like that".

  What an idiot........has she not ever heard of "forensic science/evidence"? This is 2005, not 1905 and the corenor can usually tell how and when someone died. If she didn't want to look after her disabled daughter anymore (which I will assume was the motive), she should have maybe put her in a Home. That's usually preferable to stabbing someone.

  Reminds me of the Scott Peterson fiasco. If he really didn't want to be a father/husband, then why didn't he get fixed and get a divorce? Once again, that's usually preferable to murder........

  I'd be interested to know if there was still the JW connection. She probably got no help or support from the congregation in caring for her daughter, but they wouldn't have wanted her to have "worldly" help, either. The elders would have told her it was her load to carry.

  Tragedy... how many times have we said that on this board when something happens ?

  It sounds as though this woman had had enough and flipped, then panicked.

  I think Emma was being unduly harsh and judgemental without knowing the facts .

  Oh my gosh!!!!

  I knew Betty Whitten and worked in f. service w/her. Kiki was very young then. Her husband's name is Earsten. He always wanted to carry our little girl as she had red hair and big blue eyes and rosy cheeks. He said she has so much color unlike the rest of you guys who look all washed out! (he was a real joker)

  I'm shocked. They also had another son older than Kiki.

  Please Emma.

  Don't be bitter. This was a wonderful family. Betty was so sweet and her husband Earsten was so friendly and comical. People did help out little Kiki. She couldn't walk by herself. Her older brother also helped. And the cong. did help w/Kiki, and Betty and her family were accepted by most all even though they were the only black family there. There's always going to be those with a problem w/racism.

  Should've read the news article first, but I was so shocked when I read Betty's name.

  I thought Kiki was the same age as our son. I didn't know that they had another girl though we lost touch w/them when we moved. I remember too when Betty and her mom brought over to our home a large bag of snapped beans from the garden. This was the type of person Betty was - very friendly and giving.

  Something definitely went wrong w/her psychologically. I feel so sad right now.

  Oh wow. I remember reading that article, and thinking what in the world could that woman have been thinking, and what lead her to that point? So sad that she was a JW. What a messed up bunch we are. (were.)

  This is truely a tragedy that only the mother knows the reason why she did it. My heart goes out to her at this time and also to the dead "Kiki".

  What I don't understand is the comments made to Emma. She has been called harsh, judgemental and bitter.

  I would also agree to what Emma stated from my own experiences. From the comments made toward her.......it sounds like faithful JW's bashing her statement.

  Please reread what she said or tell me what I am not understanding.
