Ok, here's a hypothetical situation that I find interesting. Now, imagine you are in the house of a lady in her 90's with ailing health. Further suppose that in this house she possesses the Mona Lisa. Now, as you are visiting her, peddling whatever goods or services you’ve come to pedal, (you don’t know her personally), imagine that the house become engulfed in flames. You are in the living room, but are quickly surrounded by suffocating, noxious vapors and intolerable heat that threatens to end your lives at any moment.

You have exactly enough time to either save the lady or save the painting. Which do you save, and why? Would you feel guilty? Is the question even worthy of asking? Do we value some art or inanimate models of life more than the very life it is modeling?

I would save the lady without hesitation. Just because she's ill doesn't make her life less valuable,

    Would you feel guilty?

No. The Mona Lisa has been forged and numerous photos of it taken. People could still look at it's image whenever they wanted.

thats a very easy one to answer.. save the old woman. how could you chose canvas and paint over her life?

The old woman is in ailing health, and is dying. The painting could make you rich. Do you think everyone would make such a choice easily? Of course, I think the first instinct would be to save the woman. The situation doesn't really work. Would most people make the same decision if given time to reflect?

It would not even enter my mind to save the artwork. A human life is priceless and so much more valuable.

I don't think in a life or death situation, such as that, you would have the time to think about what to do. My first instinct would be to save a woman from a horrible death, not wood with paint on it. Sorry, I love art but I couldn't live with myself knowing I made an educated and contemplative decision about letting someone die.

I'd save the lady too - life is far more precious.

And hey, who knows she might remember you in her will for it!
