How hard should a 70 year old man push himself

I hand push my lawn mower. I mow three yards. The one I gave my daughter is the hardest to mow because it has a down hill side to it that makes it hard to stand up and push the mower. Today I was mowing and sweating and breathing heavily. I kept at it until I was through but felt I was over doing it a little. Is it dangerous to push myself like that? If I don't kept at it, I'm afraid I will get so I can't do these things. Maybe I should ask my doctor.

Last year I mowed all three without stoping but today I could only do one and a half. It takes two and a half hours to finish all three, if I go really fast when pushing the mower. I enjoy my mowing and hope I can keep at it for several years more.

you just gotta listen to your body.

breathing hard and being about to drop is a good sign your pushing too hard!

you say you can do 1 1/2 hours no prob.. stop there and rest then do the other half.

dont drop dead.. we need you around here !

Ken, I think it is a sign of good health to be able to mow those lawns. Last year you were in great shape. This is probably the first mow of the Spring? This will be the hardest one since the lawn is so lush and dense. The subsequent mows will be easier as you keep it up.

I used to hand mow the lawns a couple of years ago. I was proud of myself and it was a tremendous cardio work out. But the last time I did it I felt sick afterwards and knew I was out of shape. I have since put on more pounds and would not attempt it all in one day right now.

There is alot involved in push mow work. Arms, legs, heart.

I say get the lawn under control and keep it up with the hand mower, but maybe the first mow should be with a power mower.

How long has it been since you had a check up?

(just for your info a friends husband (43 yrs old) went out to mow the lawn on a Saurday. Felt sick, came inside to lie down and never woke up. It can happen.

We need to keep our stamina up but not over exert all at once after a restful winter.

Oh by the way Ken, my brother is like you having a huge yard to mow. He just turned 50 and bought a riding lawn mower.

I bought a weed wacker for the sloping part of our lawn. It takes a bit of time, but the wacker is light and not strenuous to use.

Our lawn mower has the front wheel drive pulling ability which makes a slight slope very easy. I have to run after our mower it moves so fast!

Isnt Spring and working out of doors wonderful and enjoyable?

Both my husband and I awoke at the same time this morning and exclaimed "What a beautiful day!"

It's a big change in stamina from one year to the next and it wouldn't do any harm to check things with your doctor. Unless you weren't exercising for that year and lost stamina that way.

This last year has made a big difference in how I feel. I didn't notice I was getting old untill about 2 years ago when I would climb on a latter and feel uncomfortable, didn't have the balance I used to have. This last year my joints have been feeling old. It's harder to get out of the car, and off the couch. When I'm mowing they don't hurt but if I just move my sholders around I can feel some pain. I can't put on my socks as easily as I did when I was young.

I guess I'm fortunate to be as healthy as I am, don't take any pills or drugs, sleep very well at night and still look OK, considering my age. I guess I will keep going until something kills me.

Sounds like you are doing very well, Ken. Don't push too hard, though. I like gd's suggestion of getting a checkup too.

Yep..I too am feeling it and I am only 64..
I used to cut our grass and my MIL's farm. She had a big lot. But I used a riding lawn mower.
Have you considered getting a self propelled mower? You can still walk and get the exercise but the lawnmower will pull you..And the front wheel propelled is the best for turning corners..
They are also cheaper then a riding lawn mower.Unless you are mechanically inclined and can work on a used one as needed..
I was always working on mine till it finally blew..
Stay away from Drs. and you will live longer..No really ..we should all have a checkup at least annually. If hubby had went to the Dr when I wanted him too he may still be alive today..
So get your check up and relax..we need to enjoy these golden years...
    Snoozy Q...
ps..Is your lawnmower a manual push or just a motor one that you have to push?
I hate those manual ones...my MIL got one and it kept flipping over on me.Too many small rocks in her yard. And it took me two hours to cut it on a riding mower...
