    Mulan and Princess:
I too lost a dear friend to breast cancer. I'm so sorry for you loss.

I plan to participate in the "Race for a Cure" in the city on Sept. 23rd. You two want to join me? There's a 10K run or a 5K walk. I figured it's about time I start giving back to some of the agencies who have helped breast cancer patients and their families. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is among the best-run non-profits around.

Please check this link for any who want to do something positive: http://www.raceforthecure.com/
I'll be wearing my pink ribbon pin today.

    Happy Birthday, Mulan.

    Dear Mulan and Princess,

My heart goes out to both of you and your families. I have also lost a friend to breast cancer...she was only in her early thirties and left behind a grieving husband and two year old daughter. Please know that you are in my thoughts....I am so sorry for the loss you have all suffered.

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The long years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West,
beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars
tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.
Who now shall refill the cup for me?

For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the Stars,
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds,
    and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
and out of a grey country darkness lies
on the foaming waves between us, and mist
covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar.
Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!

I am very sorry for your loss. I, too, read Sharon's story about a year ago and was pleased to discover your relationship these past few months.

I know the two of you were very close, Marilyn, like sisters. Death is so unkind for the living, but often a welcome respite for the suffering one. Try to take some comfort in that. And in the fact that she felt your love until the last possible moment.

My condolences to the rest of her family as well.

    Princess: consider it done.

Isn't it amazing how many times Witnesses will accept the services of charitable institutions, but will not consider donating. During my friend's battle with breast cancer, she and her family received many benefits from the Komen Foundation and the Fred Hutchinson Research Center. I think her own family later donated, but I know the others in the congregation looked down on them for it, reasoning: "It would be better to contribute to the preaching activity as only that will solve mankind's problems."

How on earth will producing more magazines or building more Kingdom Halls help cancer victims NOW? Families suffering from such illnesses need medication, therapy, hospice services, family counselling...all these things cost money. How many self-employed Witnesses have medical insurance? They are often on the receiving end of charitable gifts, but refuse to contribuite.

That's why I decided to get involved with this particular cause, although I won't limit myself to one.

I'll send details to your e-mail.

    Was,

Mulan loves the idea too. We will try to get more friends and family to participate as well...for Sharon.

Thank you everyone. It is a really hard time, and there is so much to do in the aftermath. I miss her so much, and keep looking across the room for her. I'll write more in a few days.

Randy Watters added an addendum to Sharon's story yesterday. Check it out. It is the email Sharon's husband sent to him.
