That's the hard part. The easy part is just to be an atheist.
Actually, life was much easier as a "believer". I didnt have to think, reason or rely on real evidence for any of my "beliefs". God was just a drug that I could inject myself with whenever I did'nt have the courage to cope with the reality of the human condition. Believing in something for which you have no evidence save for "personal" subjective experiences is extremely easy. Once you abandon belief in supernatural hocus pocus you actually need to make an effort to find evidence for how you perceive the world. I face the world on my own, I deal with problems on my own, I rely on myself and my inner strength for everything I accomplish in my life. When I do need help, I rely on REAL human beings, not fictional tribal deities concocted in a desert by wondering nomads 2000 years ago. Choosing to take the 'god drug' is a far easier path to take, but to each their own.
It works for the pink unicorns...
Tee hee....
Just out of interest; were the majority of current non-believers previously the non-thinking, non-reasoning kind of believer?

Of course! I was a jehovahs witness !!!! LOL
Doh! Shoulda guessed
Amen, country girl! Don't waste your breath. In truth, if someone is going to change their minds on something like this, they almost need a life-altering experience. When it happens, then they'll start asking the questions. That is why I don't even bother talking to mormons or jws at the door--- they are all geared up to convert me at my door. Yep. Back in the day, I was an atheist too. I was totally non believing, I had no faith and complete disdain for the ones who believe. That is until I had an experience that I still cannot explain. Then I started asking questions. I finally realized that I do not have all the answers and I never will. And guess what? I don't mind not knowing. Faith is more than believing--it is trusting. I do not regret my non-believing days--I needed atheism at the time. But I am thankful for the experience that changed my disbelief into an open mind. Since then, my path has been filled with beautiful and wonderous thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Yeah, I definitely understand where you are coming from, startingover. I just don't feel religious belief to be compelling enough to spend much of my time discussing it with believers anymore, either on the internet, or in real life. I guess when your ideas are threatened you fight harder, so I figure that's the motivation behind most believers - they are trying to defend their weak position.
I don't blame you for walking away from it for awhile. I had to do that too. There are some people in my life I decided I cannot discuss religion with. It gets too frustrating. And I know they are baiting the discussion to win a convert. As if.
It seems worse discussing it online, too. I figure at least some of the people that like to argue on-line are pretty much just trying to be annoying for the hell of it. I do my best to avoid being easy bait. If they want an online fight, they should come up with something better than religion, IMO.
