I.P. Address

In my judicial committee they trawled through the web looking from comments I had made on this site, Wikipedia, my own site which was anonymous and net registry sites to prove 'apostate' comments that I had made were from me. They were able to prove jwfacts was me by piecing all this information together, and particularly when i registered my website I put my own postal address on it.
I thought is was all a joke though, as I had already said to their faces and put in writing to the Society that the WTS is a cult so I could not understand why they were wasting their time. I think they get so tangled up with their own importance that they miss the obvious.

jwfacts, the WTS did the same with me a few years ago. Except when the elders finally came around with all the damning info, they only showed me printouts from this site and I told them yes, it was me. The PO mentioned he had a bunch of other info to prove it was me, but since I admitted it, I didn't get to see the rest of their "proof." But I already knew how they found me - it was a mistake on my part that I immediately knew I had made. The WTS must have been on a 24hr watch because they jumped on my mistake right away and found out my identity.

But if I wanted to compile a dossier on all of the active, 'fading' posters here, I would do exactly what I did a few posts ago. (coincidentally, my ip address at home changed last night - first time in about two years - so that little transparent gif doesn't show anymore in this thread)

But I would be cautiously aware of anyone who used that little trick like I did earlier. Posting photos from a personal website(not a community photo hosting site) could also be used for the same purposes. I know it would be hard to tell, but this is just another reason to use a proxy if you are indeed worried about being traced.

The IP address site located me to 'the UK - or possibly the US'! I think it's because it has my ISP proxy server address rather than my pc address.

anyone using the net for a long period of time ( in my case over 12 years) knows most of this stuff.

The WT is the last group I would worry about hacking my pc. They are the least scary. The most scary is George Bush and his blatant lack of respect for your privacy.

That's why I have a separate pc for internet and family business.

In this case, it is not about "hacking." It is about staying hidden from tactics that the WTS could use to find inactive or fading ones that are vocal on the web. For instance, if you just happened to mention on previous threads that you had a green car, a dog, a pioneer wife, and you just asked to be removed as an elder due to "health concerns," but in reality you know the truth about the truth and are now ready to make a break by fading, the WTS could use those little tidbits of information and then your IP address to narrow down the search to your small town. Once they have your one congregation town, how easy do you think it would be to put 2 & 2 together? Mind you, none of this pertains to those who are already df'd, da'd, or those who are neither but just don't give a damn anymore. It's merely for the ones who have something to lose and would like to take steps to shield themselves a little better.

Hell, Scientology uses whatever means available at their disposal to find dissenters within their cult. Why would the WTS be any different?

    Now that was funny.

Using JWD as a forum to Bush bash. Now that was a stretch!

Echoing what Jourles said. There is no question that the Society monitors active exJW boards like this one. If they can get your IP address, it could help them to locate you. It's another clue in the pile of clues they are putting together for you.
That being said Jourles, I don't think it's quite as easy as you say to match server activity up with posts. You will get a hit for every pageview--in many cases there is a 10/1 or even higher ratio of views to posts. I think narrowing addresses down to actual posters with your hosted image trick isn't that feasible. Also, if someone was really worried about that, all major browsers have an option to load images only from the originating web site--your image wouldn't get loaded.
In any case--seriously folks, if you're worried about IP address security and geolocation, even if it's a stretch, use torpark. http://torpark.nfshost.com/index.php. It might be a little slow but it will look like you are in the Netherlands, or Japan, or whatever.
