Quite a weird basic question but does JWism originate from Protestantism or Catholicism.
I know they came esentialy from the Aventists but they themselves hide their original leanings. As far as I can tell, especaily with looking for loopholes they do lean towards Protestantism. And since most wack-a-doo "christian" cults go back to the days of the Puritans, my guess is that they are Protestant.
I always imagined so and it used to piss me off no end, as a 70% of my cong were displaced prods taking much of the lead and in a way viewing themselves as better than the 30% that were originaly catholic. Though nobody ever said it I could always feel it.
Origins of Jehovahs Witnesses.

JW's are a Protestant movement. But as my Greek Orthodox friends tell me, "Protestants are the Catholics' problem" and it's true. Protestants broke off from the church of Rome aroung 1517 a.d.. This was after the schism between the Roman and Eastern churches (now known as "Orthodox") of 1054 a.d.

Within the past week I was looking at a chart listing the characteristics of numerous Christian sects. Jehovahs Witnesses were categorized in the Protestant vein.

They are an adventist offshoot and definitely protestant in spirit and theology/ideology, in fact all the theology they themselves did not originate is protestant. So it's strange that they are trying to deny their rather obvious roots.

My mom (anointed) would refer to herself sometimes as a "True" catholic, under her breath or in a jokingly manner, but yet very serious about it. Figure that out.

I don't really think they're trying to deny them. Such considerations would be considered below them. I think they just don't call out attention to it or anything.

My impression is that they are trying to make out that they are something out of the ordinary, an organisation that links back to the apostolic church without the links being present.

I would agree with that.
