james_woods, thanks so much for this. Perhaps many of us can remember dear old ones such as these that we knew well while we were "in the truth..." It's people like that that keep it from being all bad memories. I know I was acquainted with many dear loving friends like these.

The Society often tries to point at such friendships and "brotherly love" as being proof of their being inspired, and it breaks my heart to see honest human love and friendship being co-opted for essentially political means.

In any case I hope everyone remembers that Witnesses are humans, too, and that it's the wicked Witness system they're caught up in that really twists them into evil, not the other way around.

One thing that you said really jumped out at me. It was the comment about the 50s and 60s JWs. My parents were raised as JWs in the 40s and 50s, and confessed that it was a different era.

Post '75, and especially post '81 has certainly seen some increasingly negative changes as the WTS tries to maintain control over the flock with a rod of iron.

My Grandmother was of the type that you write about. She would have been in her hundreds now, had she lived beyond 92. They had a flair and a devil-may-care attitude that left lasting impressions on young minds

It's great to have some good memories among all the bad memories most have of the JWs. I also knew a few who were genuinely kind, funny, open-hearted people. But I often felt their compassion was wasted by being part of a loveless org. How much good they could have accomplished in the real world!

very, very nice. I really enjoyed the walk down memory lane. It caused me to remember some of the really dear older women, including my grandmother, who were just like your ladies.

It sure was. I grew up as a JW in the 50's and early 60's. Totally different religion in my viewpoint.
