Former sisters, remember the pant suit controversy in the seventies?

    Yeppers -

I remember the blue legs in winter. Wore those cable knit stockings and socks on the feet too. No pant suits for us. A big no-no. One sister tried it in the other cong. that met at our Hall. She was the subject of the gossipers. She had to stop.

And Parakeet, I, too, remember blue legs walking to highschool. It was horrible. Graduated in ' 67. Very few guys had cars back then, but I found me a boyfriend who had a car. What a relief. What a joy to have a warm ride.

I have friends in Denmark. The sisters there wear pants all the time, even out in service. I have determined that I will start wearing pantsuits this fall...should prove interesting.

My reasoning is that if Condoleeza Rice can meet heads of state in a pantsuit, it has become more than appropriate business wear. Since the "official" stance is that we should match the business attire of our locality, there should be no problem with it. If there is, I will place the onus upon the elders to articulate and explain that "problem."

I remember touring Bethel in the mid-70s as a teenager, and I wore pants. Now, sisters have to wear skirts. A friend went to Patterson last year to be in a friends wedding. She packed pants, in addition to meeting clothes. Upon walking out of her bedroom in the "hotel," she noticed a sign alerting sisters that they are to wear dresses at ALL times. She was disgusted, AND that left her with almost nothing to wear.

I will not be checking into THAT hotel any time soon!

I know one elder that really hated pants suits but had no problem with taking his wife to the surgeon to get a 38D chest. How weird is that?

My mother, who has always been extremely thin, got called into the back room over this because it was so freezing in the hall that she wore pants to keep from shivering/getting sick. About that same time my dad was reproved and lost his privileges for refusing to shave his beard. They were quite a pair, we were really popular in our cong. *not*!

Before she became too ill to go to the hall (she has phone line hookup now) she still wore pants. She just wore a skirt so big and long to her ankles, and tucked them into her boots, so no one would see.

    Ridiculous, the whole thing!

HEHE My dear Mom and I went out in Feb when it was bitter cold in our pants suits in the door to door work. Boy did we have fun and you know not a single householder said a word to us and we were toasty warm. And no we didn't wear a dress over them. We always thought that wearing dresses in the bitter cold was just plain insane. No darn brother would go around with ice wind blowing up his crotch. All be darned if us sisters needed to do that. And yes her and I would show up at the meetings at the KH dressed our pants suits. I think the Elders were afraid of my Mom so they didn't say anything. My then JW husband didn't like it but he didn't raise too much fuss because he knew it cold out. Anyway by the time summer came and went we forgot about wearing pants during the winter, and we just stopped going door to door when it was really cold out. LOL

hey fandorn -- that IS weird! just goes to show how twisted the reasoning.... ironically this is the issue that pushed me over the edge and showed me clearly that the jw elders (at least in my cong) were just pharisees... i asked my po if he thought it was alright for me to wear pantsuits in the cold ne winters where we just froze.....he said yes....i said i would write a letter to wts ...he said NO!!!!! what would they think of me? i soon left to wear warmer clothes..... best wishes, nowisee

One of the many things that convinced me it couldn't possibly be "the truth" - too many stupid rules on insignificant matters!

sorry I didn't get back to this thread sooner..............some cool answers..........funny.......I was a rebellious teenager anyways, 17 and not even getting to meetings more than a couple times a month..........then, I brought a "worldly" boy to the meetings..........ended up coming into the truth and I married him and he is an elder to this day.............lol.........I found out years later that there was SCANDALOUS gossip about THAT in our KH!! LOL!

Pant Suits were invented by Satan himself! The *man* is supposed to wear the pants in the house, not the woman!

    Elsewhere ... excellent point.

Yes, if you closely examine the crotch area of pantsuits, they are emblazened with a microscopic "666"
