All the End Times and Jesus Return speculation stems from the actual words of scripture.

My point in the previous post is that you cannot rely on any of them as having actually been spoken by the persons to whom the quotes are attributed. Nor can you be sure the words were even spoken.

Unless and until the basis for prophecy is shown to be valid the rest is mere spiritual masturbation.

But if that was the intent of the Gospel writers they were certainly not making that clear.

Well, it was the very next thing they wrote about.

Besides was it 6 or 8 (ala Luke) days later?

About Mat 17:1 - Mark says the same as here, Mar 9:2 but Luk 9:28 says, it was about an eight days after, which may be reconciled in this manner; Matthew and Mark leave out the day in which Christ delivered the above sayings, and that in which he was transfigured, and so reckon but six days; and Luke takes them both into the account, and makes it eight days, so that they all agree; and it appears, in short, to be that day seven night.

    John Gill
How many would have died in those 6-8 days so as to explain the statement that "some standing here today will not taste death until...

Lets see. Since only Peter, James, and John saw the transfiguration, 3 from 12 leaves 9 D Dog

No, after 6 or 8 days

Well, it was the very next thing they wrote about.
That was my point. It takes place in the narrative only after 6 or 8 days after giving the prophecy of the coming of Jesus with the angels to judge the world within the lifetime of at least some of his listeners. Its pretty straightforward if you just read it as it stands and don't force a foreign idea onto the last sentence in the prophecy. see Leolaia comment that explains this.

    Mark 1:14-15
Jesus went in to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. "The time has come," he said. "The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news."

    Matthew 4:17
From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is near."

    Mark 13:32-37
"No one knows about the day or the hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the father. Be on guard. Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It's like a man going away: He leaves his house in charge of his servants, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. So you must also keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back-whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, don't let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone."

    I Thessalonians 4:15
For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. Paul believed that the time of the parousia was so near that he advised his followers to eschew worldly things:

    I Corinthians 7:29
What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as though they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as though they are not; those who buy something, as if it is not theirs to keep; those who used the things of the world, as if not engrossed in time. For this world in its present form is passing away.

    Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his son...

    Hebrews 9:26
But now he [Jesus] has appeared once for all at the end of ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

    Hebrews 10:37
For in just a little while, He who is coming will come and will not be late.

    I Peter 1:20
He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

    I Peter 4:7
The end of all things is near.

    James 5:9
Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The judge is standing at the door!

Also I feel the episode where Jesus vows to fast until the Kingdom is established reflects this idea in an even more immediate sense. It may have been originally James' line as it is attributed to him in G Hebrews but reinterpreted and transferred to Jesus.

"For I say to you that never in any way will I eat of it until it is bountifully provided in the kingdom of God!" and "Truly I say to you, that in no way will I drink from the produce of the vine until the Kingdom of God is come!"

Lost me there. Are you saying 9 apostles died in those 6 days?
