I doubt Rutherford smoked. He had a collapsed lung and was susceptible to pneumonia (which he contracted after nearly freezing to death in a frozen lake in his youth, and then in 1918-1919 while imprisoned).

Hi leolia,
you seems to tell that Rutherford had had pneumonia before his emprisonement of 1918 ?
Where are you find this surprising information ?
And what kind of proof we have that Rutherford had had pneumonia in 1918 ?
Bye

chasson....Rutherford's bout with pneumonia in 1919 is mentioned in the Olin Moyle v. Franz, Knorr, et al. court transcript. Rutherford's earlier experience with pneumonia is also related in an interview by Hayden Covington shortly before he died:
Covington: He had been, in his younger life, a book agent selling books. He was going along in Missouri and he slipped and fell through the ice, and took pneumonia. He thought he was about to die, and he prayed to the Lord that if he came out of that, he would never turn a book agent away. He was in his office and heard his secretary chasing a book agent out of his office. He ran out of the door and balled him out for running the book agent out. It turned out to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses with Pastor Russell's books....
Brother Rutherford had to get away from the intense cold in the East in the winter time. He had a collapsed lung and there was a danger he could contact pneumonia because of that experience when he fell in the water and nearly froze to death in Missouri. Remember he said he wasn't turning any book agents away from his office. When Rutherford was behind bars he put his hands on the bar and said to Jehovah, "If you ever get me out of here I am going to give the old whore [the Catholic Church] the worst licking that she ever had..." and he dedicated his whole life, remaining life, to that pursuit.

That is some luxury for the only chosen humble and prudent servant of jehovah having two not one luxury cars. It shows that he was precisely just like his supposed enemies that he described as being part of luxury loving sinful Babylon.

*** yb75 p. 120 United States of America (Part Two) ***
As it is, during the months of their incarceration in the Atlanta penitentiary, Brothers Rutherford and Van Amburgh had shared a cell having no air circulation due to a fan malfunction. Being unable to get sufficient oxygen, their systems had been filled with poisons. While Rutherford was imprisoned, in fact, a lung condition had developed that stayed with him for the rest of his earthly life. Shortly after his release he contracted pneumonia. Brother Rutherford became so ill that his survival was in question. Because of his physical condition and owing to the fact that his family was in California, he went there.
*** yb75 p. 194 United States of America (Part Three) ***
Briefly it may be said that Brother Rutherford had a severe case of pneumonia after his release from unjust imprisonment during 1918-1919 because of his faithfulness to Jehovah. Thereafter he had only one good lung. It was virtually impossible for him to remain in Brooklyn, New York, during the winter and still carry out his duties as the Society’s president. In the 1920’s he went to San Diego under a doctor’s treatment. The climate there was exceptionally good and the doctor urged him to spend as much time as possible in San Diego. That is what Rutherford did ultimately.
*** jv chap. 7 p. 75 Advertise the King and the Kingdom! (1919-1941) ***
On Tuesday morning, April 1, Brother Rutherford arrived in Pittsburgh, where the headquarters offices were now located. Here, too, the brothers, learning that he was due to arrive, scheduled a banquet, which was held that evening at the Hotel Chatham. The conditions in prison, though, had taken their toll on Brother Rutherford. He had developed a weakened lung condition, and as a result, after his release he contracted a severe case of pneumonia. So, shortly afterward his ill health made it necessary for him to go to California, where he had some relatives.

Are you certain that the Catholic Church is the whore that Rutherford was going to be licking?

Hi Leolaia,The story about young Joe Rutherford going door to door selling encyclopedia sets, falling into a stream of icy water, and almost losing his life to pneumonia, is probably a Watchtower myth. During the period in question Rutherford was the primary teacher at Carpenter Elementary school in Syracuse. The school board liked him so much that they wanted to extend his contract for another year. But Joe declined the offer and accepted appointment as court stenographer, a position that would better advance his career in politics. While contemporary accounts frequently mention Rutherford's business activities and his travel, nothing is said about him selling books, nor is there mention about him suffering from a bout with pneumonia that almost cost him his life.
No doubt Hayden Covington heard the tale of "shoeless Joe Rutherford door-to-door book salesman," from the Judge himself. It does make a good propaganda piece, Rutherford going door-to-door trying to make a living while enduring extreme weather and getting doors slammed in his face. This would especially appeal to the JWs of the 1930s and 1940s who were trying to survive by selling Rutherford's books door-to-door and enduring similar hardships. Such a story couldn't help but motivate the flock to strive for more sales.
