Are there not enough anti-Witness books out there?

does this mean no one would be interested in my book when it is done?

Earlier someone mentioned that differnet books will affect people in different ways. What hits home for one might not do it for another.

Something that a lot of what silentlambs has done and what is done here and on many other websites is an innoculation of sorts. People who want some kind of info, need to get what will affect them and help them to stay away from the indoctrination of JWs.

And we have no idea what will hit them and make them stay away.

How often do we have people post here saying they are dating a JW and want info? Way too often. This info needs to be out there in as many forms as possible.

Bill Bowen, silentlambs brought one huge issue to public awareness. Dateline and the other progra,s around the world did a great job of uncovering the issue of sexual abuse and its coverup. But those progams are gone. people can't just go to the library and pick it up to take home with them. I think there is a real need for books like this that exposes the underbelly regarding this issue and so many others.

    Parakeet,

You are right, Bible Studies are a very important group. Many who email me are bible studies researching both sides of the story, they are not so brainwashed to believe they must only read Watchtower propoganda. It does not take much to help a bible study see straight through it. It is wonderful when a person writes saying they have been studying for a couple of years and are so grateful to have stumbled accross my site and have stopped.

Lady Lee: I and many others will be very greatful to read your book. We know how many thousands can relate to the abuse issue. While the abuse angle is hardly unique (wish that it were), what is so inspiring about your story is how you have turned your past around and used it to help mold you into the kind of person who is devoted to helping others. It is not just a woeful tale but gives hope.

I would be proud to own a copy of your book when it is finished.

I have long since stopped caring about the active Jehovah's Witness. Let them ferment in their self-righteousness. They aren't interested in changing or listening to a different point of view. You can't reason with an active JW anymore than you can reason with a drunk. You’re only impressing yourself, if you try. They’re intoxicated on the Watchtower. Don’t waste your time thinking you’re ever gonna reach an active JW. You gotta wanna change before you can change, and those (JW’s) who aren’t interested in change, I say lettem’ rot in their phony pious self-righteousness.

Instead, reason with the former JW who is actually interested in different points of view and who is hurting and open to change. So I say, all the more books for the X-JW the better! Each author’s experience is slightly different and may be able to connect with a particular person(s) out there who needs help. Yes, more X-JW books please!

    Terry,

Here are some comments on your post. You said, "Here is my short list of what pulls a curious JW away from most (not all) Ex-Witness books on the market."

"1.The book immediately demonstrates a bias. Any anti-JW bias will be read as an unfair attack. The solution to this is a NEUTRAL presentation, which is balanced, fair and more of a fact-finding expedition.

"Captives of a Concept" has been translated into German by the same person who translated "In Search of Christian Freedom" into German (Herbert Raab). Here is what he said about the book…

"’Captives of a Concept’ is in my opinion a very fine book, since it speaks in a matter-of-fact tone about the Watchtower teachings. I don't really like those writings of ex-Witnesses that a full of spite and hate. Surely most Witnesses seek to serve Jehovah sincerely but are mislead by some (or should I say: many) erroneous teachings. So they are often victims themselves. As to the Watchtower leaders, it is as Ray Franz wrote in his Search book: ‘We are not to judge them; for only Jehovah and Christ Jesus know how much guilt they have heaped on themselves.’

"2.The ex-JW author usually lapses into sob story of how they were duped and mistreated.

"Captives of a Concept" does not do this.

"The solution to this is steering clear of the personal recriminations.

"Captives of a Concept" does this.

"3.The worst offenders (from the JW point-of-view) are the newly born-again ex-Jdubs who extol the ‘I've found Jesus scenarios’!

"Captives of a Concept" does not do this.

"The solution to this is to put selling your newfound "Hallelujah" moment on the backburner and concentrate on helping a trapped JW find something to agree with in what you are offering.

"Captives of a Concept" does not have a "Hallelujah moment." But it does offer an unorthodox suggestion about how to go about "helping a trapped JW find something to agree with."

"4. The average rank and file JW hardly knows (or cares!) about the history of the organization. They've been led by the nose into the "progressive revelation" over time nonsense. "That was THEN and this is NOW" would be the natural response.

Perfect. "Captives of a Concept" explains why this Witness' thinking is what has led them to "The One Mistake All Jehovah’s Witnesses Have Made" – Chapter 5

"The solution to this is to concentrate on two important non-refutable points: 1914 as the result of the elusive 607 B.C.E. date and false prophecy. (i.e. How can a false prophet be Jehovah's mouthpiece?)"

"Captives of a Concept" takes a different approach that doesn’t involve having to delve into (1) ancient history as it relates to the destruction of Jerusalem or (2) the Society’s complicated interpretations that end up in 1914 as the date of Christ’s "invisible presence." The book’s approach only requires the reader to know that 1914 is the date the Society assigns to the Second Coming of Christ and then hold them to it.

"The number one problem with reaching a JW who is on the fence about whether they are in the right religion is this: THERE IS NO PLACE THEY CAN GO to replace the Kingdom Hall that won't make them flinch. You can't send them anywhere. They are stuck out there on their own. They sure as hell aren't going to skip down to the local Baptist church! When you take something away from somebody you have to fill the empty space with more than just nothing.

"Captives of a Concept" offers an alternative ‘place they can go to replace the Kingdom Hall.’ - See former Circuit Overseer on Frye’s suggestion on page 136.

So with the over abundance of books already out there, you truly think that adding more on will make a difference? Even if someone is studying or someone is on the fence, they have plenty "right now" to aid them. There is no shortage!

I concur with Cameron. I have many books on the JW's and "Captives of a Concept," is for me, the best of them.

What is your point, free2beme? That everyone inclined to write an anti-JW book should not bother? You know, we already have "plenty" of novels, biographies, travel, science and history books, more than any of us will be able to read in our lifetimes. Why should anyone write anything at all any more? It's all been covered, right??

I man I know just wrote a biography about Lincoln. I wonder how many had already been written. Did that mean no one would read his book and that he wasted his time?

There is always a need for a fresh or different viewpoint on most topics. Why think that everything that could ever be written, has been, and from all the possible viewpoints.

    I welcome a well-written, well-documented book about JWs.

My point is the same one I would say to a Witness who felt this latest Watchtower article was going to cause a stir in society. It wont, write all you want, but don't put some unrealistic weight to it. Like it is something that will change the world. There are already plenty of books out there, that covered the same topic tenfold and the society is still there. You can add to it, give the slant on things that you think is not covered and even express some great insight. In the end, the shelves are not empty in the anti-JW topic and your addition might please someone. Yet, the society will not be brought down with a publication on them, unless the whole world suddenly became interested in this tiny religion. If that happened, and people started turning on them, then guess what ... your fulfilling a prophesy they have long since wanted and now it makes them stronger.
