Best to you and your husband and Butch.

Reading that gave dedpoet a shock, lol. We aren't married, though that might happen in time. At the moment we are happily living together, the three of us now of course.

Butch is a lovely dog, so friendly to people, though not to other dogs. He is a pit bull terrier, and he's already made himself at home. You'd think he'd been here years, not hours. I guess he knows when he's well off.

It's a lovely dog I am sure it will find a great home with you. Did you ever keep a dog in the past? I had a dog for a few months now and all it's fine except that when it run away a couple of times it came back with fleas but a good wash with an anti flea shampoo cleared the problem.

Sorry my mistake. You know what they say about "assuming"? Best to you both.

The trainer I mentioned has good points for easing dogs' fears around other dogs. One of his points is that you walk him w/your head up high and keep him going past his fear - in this case other dogs - thereby he looks to you as the head of the pack and he doesn't feel he has to go into protection mode. Only a few dogs actually want to be the true alpha of the pack. They'd rather sit back w/ya and eat popcorn.

He thinks he's one of you? Ah oh. Next step he'll be pushing you guys off the couch and bed!! hee hee

Have fun w/him and sounds like maybe he wasn't socialized properly when he was a little squirt around other animals. Keep him leashed, walk him or run him (if you have in line skates it works great) till he's really tired and then take him around other dogs. If you have to get in between the other dog and Butch who is leashed and firmly tell him "No". This reinforces your leadership over him and makes him feel he can relax to second in command or third in the case of you and your boyfriend. Remember you have to practice this and it won't take long for him to get the idea.

Juni (ps - I'm learning a lot in dog behavior from Cesar Milan.) Makes for a happier relationship between your dog and you.

Nice Choice, I have 3 pit's at the moment, all 3 are people pleasers, they really do want your approval (except for occasionally chasing a cat) but even then, they know they were doing wrong, and suck up to ya

From experience this breed needs to run... walks are good, but they have more energy than the average dog.. (that's why I have 3, so they can wear each other out ), but my one girl (just over a year old) can jump a fence like a deer.. Lucily she just want's to sprint down the steet to release energy or something.

Thanks for the tip OFG. We are going to take him a long walk later on, it's a bit hot here at the moment. We have both had dogs before, so we are used to looking after them. Having a dog is something we have discussed at length for a while and, as we are both off work for a few days, I am back thursday and dp wednesday, we decided to take the plunge today.

OFG, those are two beautiful dogs as well.

I have the feeling that Butch is going to rule here soon. We got him settled on an old chair that dedpoet's last dog slept on, then went to bed ourselves, but when we woke up he was on our bed, with his head on the pillow! Dedpoet thinks (hopes) it might be cos it was his first night, and he will settle for the chair soon. I hope he's right, or we may have to get a lock for the bedroom door.

He was in the chair, where he'd lay most of the day, when we went to bed, and we never heard him sneak in, so the crafty hound snook in while we were asleep. Didn't want to move either, till dp mentioned "walk". That galvanised him into action.

He has been at an animal shelter for a while, with about 30 other dogs, so I bet he can't believe his luck moving in with us 2. We are both genuine dog lovers.
