The planetary emergency of global warming and what we can do about it. Al Gore. Has any read this book or seen the movie? I'm interested in your thoughts on this subject. I have read the book this week and am going to go and see the movie when it comes to my area. I thought it was educational, politics aside.

I started a thread which touches on Al Gore's film. It is chock full of scientific innaccuracies.

Al Gore is building his legacey.
The best point he made in his book was when he asks the question "Why is this even a political issue? Why is the need for better sources of energy a political".
While I agree very much with this assessment, I think it actually hurts Gores case. Gore is a politician, the guy ran for president for heavens sake.
I think there is something to be said for the amount of energy, waste, pollution, and everything else that we as humans produce. It simply isn't nothing to worry about. But I don't know if Al Gore is the best guy to be fighting for the cause.

I stopped taking Al Gore seriously after the PMRC hearings in the 80s.

I highly recommend you read Michael Crightons book, "State of Fear". Especially those of you who are 'intrigued' by Gores book or movie. The book is entertaining as a thriller with a fictional plot line, but the facts presented (and documented) are authentic and educational.

Is the planet going through another warming trend? Possibly.

Is it caused by man? NO

Is pollution by man bad? OF COURSE

Is there anything man can do to change the planets weather? NO

Chighton & John Stossel lectured/debated at Cal Tech in Pasadena a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to go, but to drop $195 for a day long debate was a bit much. The main stream newspapers didn't give it much column space, and the alternative newspapers, aka far left rags, merely ridiculed anyone from the other side.

I just think that Al Gore has no ceridibility for anything political, let alone environmental.

That seems naive. Even global warming "skeptics" like Bob Carter say that man has increased the temperature.

The types of buildings we build effect heat. The way we irrigate areas. When we burn gas in cars, it creates heat. Do you think kinetic energy just disappears? Stand in an elevator packed with a dozen people for an hour. Stand in that same elevator by yourself for an hour. Temperature difference? Of course. Run a motor in there you get an increase in temperature too.

Our presence and the things we build and do have an effect. We do have choices in our behavior.

Man certainly has the capability to change the ecosystem. If we cut down all the trees, we deplete our oxygen. If we pollute our oceans and destroy all the fish, we lose food sources and if we kill the marine plant life, we lose another source of oxygen.

On the other hand, if we are responsible with these resources, we don't face the results.

Whether our effect on global climate is large or small, it is still an effect.

jws - The man made effects you refer to are miniscule to the point of insignificance in the overall, long term weather patterns of the planet. They have almost zero effect. One volcanic eruption spews more CO2 and carbon emissions into the atmosphere in a few days than several decades of man made pollution, which is primarily LOCAL in nature. I respectfully suggest you read Crichtons book.

There is some talk that Al Gore is going to use this movie as a springboard for a "Draft Gore" movement for the Democrat Party nomination in 2008. I loathe this man, and his bimbo wife even more.
