I agree that many of the r & f are so rule- bound that they are afraid of doing something wrong , so they turn away in uncertainty.
In my last congo a family let it be known that they were "taking a break from the Truth", in other words left but never d/a'd . A friend of ours, an elderly lady fairly new , said she had been told by Sister Matriarch Knowall that she should not speak to them anymore. We put her right on that.
Every jw I see now shuns me, with a couple of exceptions. One of my work colleagues is a jw, and has to talk to me on a professional basis, but ignored me the one time I saw her in town. A friend of dedpoet's calls occasionally, and always speaks to me: he is still a jw, but tends to miss a few meetings now, and an old friend of mine still keeps in touch, but discreetly.
