An SUV full of JW's pulled into my country home driveway and a woman and her pre-teen son came to the door. I greeted them with a warm smile, wondering to myself if they knew who I was. I doubt they did as they presented me with the single sheet invitation to the Little Rock district assembly to be held July 14-16.
I thoughtfully looked it over, wondering as I did, what I could say to stimulate her thinking.
"Thanks for the invitation but you should know that I used to study with your people some years ago. I was troubled during that study as I learned that your organization has a history of attempting to predict dates for certain events they think will take place. I may be leaving out a few dates since you caught me off-guard but I seem to remember 1874, 1914, 1919, 1925, 1942, and 1975."
Her young companion's eyes were wide open as I slowly used my fingers to tally them out loud. While trying to continue her smile and appear unshaken she came back with, "I've heard of that 1975 date but that's the only one."
I concluded, "I'll concede that your group is not very proud of those other dates as well and they know it would only serve to discourage you by disclosing them. I'm not making this up and I encourage you to search for yourself in their older literature but it'll take some time and effort. You can find some of their books and magazines on eBay and other places. You can also search the Internet for the phrase "Jehovah's Witnesses" along with the word "dates" where you can see copies of such books and magazines on your own computer screen. But thanks for stopping by."
I was truthful about everything including having studied with her organization. Doesn't the year 1955 count? I was baptized (she never asked) in 1956.

Fats, I really like what you said to the people who came to your door. I have often wondered what I would say if/when they ever come to my door. Guess it will depend upon what sort of mood I am in. BTW--I received an invite to the DC here in Portland, and after all the posts about the chat room resolution, I may go to lurk about some. :) Bee

I have used this a number of times with very good results. I will add counting the dates on my fingers. That is very effective.

I'm would love for them to come to my door. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of..."I would love to chat with you for awhile, can you wait just a minute while I finish up with my Satanic ritual?"

What a gentle, reasoned response, ff! I'm going to print that one out and memorize it for the next time JWs come to the door. Great post.

Forgot to mention that it was a nice touch of "theocratic warfare" not to tell her about you're having been a baptized JW.

Some witnesses stopped by my house today also. I wasn't at home so they left an invite to the assembly and a back issue of the Awake...I mean a way back issue from 1998. Someone must have been cleaning out their literature drawer. I had a pretty good laugh at one of the titles in the "Next Issue" box. It was "The Cock -of-the-Rock: An Amazonian Jungle Beauty." Sounded like the title of a prison themed porn flick.

My friend had me get him a copy of the TRUTH book in a rush, Jehovah's Witnesses were coming over. I got it for him and showed what parts to show them for their comment. After he showed them the parts they don't believe anymore my friend asked the lead Witness to comment. She said: "Oh, we don't read that book any more.".
He said, "This book is called The Truth That Leads To Eternal Life, and it contains error and it has been replaced with another book. I have a problem with that.".
The Witness promised to do some research and get back to him. She never came back. That was 1996. They don't want to mess with anybody who knows anything or who will offer them any challenge at all.
Ya did a good job. -

Where is the assembly going to be held in LR? They used to be at Barton Colliseum, at the State Fair Grounds. It might be interesting to go and "have some fun." At least print up some of Richie's donation "money" to give to them.
