I have been reading in Wikipedia about the JW religion (very informative) and am curiouse about the role the great pyramid plays in the overall beliefs.
The 144000 nuber. The Masonic resemblences. The teaching of how the great pyramid is a sign in Egypt.
    Help.
Was raised JW all life 1956-1973.
Really am intrigued with the history of this religion.
Im newbie here so greetings to all.

    Pleased to meet you, msmuffet.

Pyramidology was a big part of the early Russellite movement, as an auxiliary proof of the chronology and also as a metaphor for the relationship between Christ and his Body, the Church (the apex being Christ, the small section below that being the elect, the section below that being the secondary spiritual class, etc.).

This was part of the general 19th-century fascination with Egyptology, which pervaded art and fashion as well. Russell similarly used Egyptian motifs like the winged sundisk, which reflect biblical themes.

I do not believe Russell was a freemason in any sense, but he did employ some of their terms and motifs in his own idiosyncratic if naive way. The pyramidology was dropped in 1928, as part of an effort to set the Watchtower Society apart from the other Bible Students who held fast to Russell's ideas. The break may have also been due to the fact that a new predication for Armageddon was set for 1928 by some Bible Students influenced by Anglo-Israelite writers on the basis of the Great Pyramid passages. Rutherford interestingly did not claim that the pyramid chronology was nonsense....in fact, he maintained its correctness and used it as a proof that only the Devil could have been behind it.

    Welcome, msmuffet!

You can find all of Russell's Studies in the Scriptures series online, along with all his other writings, at www.ctrussell.us.

Here's a direct link to the last chapter of Volume 3, where Russell writes about the pyramid. [no frames]

You'll also find some summaries/comparisons between Russell's teachings and JW teachings here.

This poem was published in the March 1, 1908 Watchtower. --VM44

    "THE STONE WITNESS"

    In a dark, dreary land,

    In a wilderness lone,

    In a desert of sand

    Stands the Witness of Stone.

    So ancient, so vast,

    So majestic its plan,

It speaks from the past Of a strength not of man.

    So perfect the whole,

    So true the design,

    It speaks to the soul

    Of a Builder divine.

    Behold how it towers

    In its grandeur alone!

    "God's ways are not ours,"

    Saith the Witness of Stone.

    It is awful to go

    When the world is asleep,

    And stand 'neath the glow

    Of the star-studded deep,

    And gaze at that tower

    With its secret unknown,--

    For great is the power

    Of the Witness of Stone!

They have scoffed at the Truth

    Which is written in ink,

    They have deemed it uncouth

    For the brain which can think;

    But they will awake

    When they see it defined

    In figures which make

    An appeal to the mind!

    The Book of the soul,

    The Book of the heart--

There is naught on that scroll

For the shrewd or the smart!

    And so there must be

    A witness for such,

    A thing they can see

And a thing they can touch.

'Tis a book for the wise,

    If the meek and the just;

'Tis a chart for the eyes

    Long blinded by dust.

'Tis a proof for the sage

    Whose god is the known--

There is truth for the age

    In the Witness of Stone.
