I think my way of peceptualising it was: if this is not the truth, then what is? Once I eliminated the alternatives I was reasonably assured that it must be the truth.
I now think that is faulty on a number of levels. First off - who says there must be a "truth" anyway? Secondly, we should believe things on basis of positive proof, not on the basis of evidence against alternatives.
