We have credit unions here, but they operate no differently than the banks, as far as I can see.
If you take a closer look, you see that the ethics behind credit unions are different. They are set up and run by members of the local community for the local community. There are no banking charges, you can't go overdrawn, no minimum amount of money is needed to open an account (quite often a bar for someone on low income to actually getting a bank account!), they don't loan you more than you can afford to pay back - the amount you can borrow depends on how much you have invested and the interest charged on a loan is very low, while interest on savings tends to run at around 5-6%. Credit unions have struck a real blow against loan sharks who operate in poor areas and charge extortionate interest.
