Why did people Jump?

This was posted on msnbc.com under an article explaining why people jumped off the twin towers.

Years ago, Frederick says, a colleague of his set up an experiment where he subjected laboratory animals to excruciating pain. They could go into another chamber to escape the pain, but if they did they would get their heads chopped off. Other lab animals were allowed to observe this, so they knew what would happen. They they, too, were placed in the pain chamber. They leaped out of it, into the killing one.

"The urge to escape the pain," said Frederick, "overrode everything else."

Of all the reports regarding the WTC catastrophe, this part of it was no doubt the most disturbing to me - normal, well-adjusted people, like you and me, being forced to jump to their deaths. Simply imagining the thoughts that rushed through their heads before and as they jumped is simply horrifying to me.

Those who are responsible for this evil MUST be punished.

And the saddest part of this is that those who jumped would "probably not be resurrected" according to the WT Society, since they committed suicide.

    bboy,

the last part of the quote I think explains it very well...the people above where the planes hit had no other escape avenue. Imagining the pain and terror they must have felt makes me physically and emotionally ill. One news report I heard told of a couple, a man and woman, who jumped hand in hand...when I heard that, all I could think was that I was glad they had each other, at least they weren't alone. My heart and mind are overwhelmed by the immensity of what has taken place.

Go fuck yourself you preachy asshole. And while you're at it, why don't you review the fact that the Bible should be where you go to find out what god thinks about stuff, not the Watchtower.

Should not that be '...review the latest teachings in the Watchtowers regarding suicide...'

The present view was not always the past view, yet perhaps it should have been.

HS....You are correct. The Societies current stance on suicide is that we cannot fully understand the why of such an act thus we are not in position to judge...

Aren't we glad that the org, oops, Jehovah has decided now that PERHAPS he will resurrect those who kill themselves. Jehovah is learning political correctness the last few years, haven't you noticed? Yes, Jehovah has blessed us lucky enough to have read our latest WTs and now understand that we are allowed to kill ourselves but only if we are mentally unstable. Pity for those poor people who did so years ago when Jehovah would NOT resurrect them. </sarcasm>

I would have jumped, too. It was the most rational thing o do. Those poor folks were being cooked alive. The temperatures melted the steel. I would've rather gotten it over with, too. I imagine hitting the ground wouldn't involve any suffering, any conscious awareness of pain.
