First of all, let me state that this board has instilled in me a profound sense of appreciation of Americans, for their eloquence in language and leaving a cult – of course created by those same “Americans” many of us “Europeans” are still victim to. Of all the Europeans, only the Scandinavians seem to have significantly towed the apostate cart.
There is a lot of wisdom in your words… but, I think the/our shame originates with the intuitive notion that we all have the potential to be those monsters at some point in our lives given the right circumstances. Yes, I at present would rather choose death over having to commit atrocities in order to save my own life (one of my sole reasons left for any belief in the existence of a God (within?)), but… think of all those child soldiers that committed unspeakable acts. Choice is relative and dependant on our progression on our path of life. Controlling the monster within often is dependant on circumstances beyond our control, not granted us by them, dependent on our progression on our path in life… as former membership of propagandistic system has shown already… we could have been Hitler’s willing executioners, circumstances beyond our control permitting. Some in my family were… (incidentally, their choice in being actively against or in favor of National Socialism both causing them to become JWs – so much for misdirected idealism)

Regarding the pics from the Abu Grav prison (and not saying that it wasn't wrong) but isn't it amazing the huge amount of condemnation of U.S. soldiers found here but nothing regarding the two U.S. soldiers who were kidnapped, had their eyes ripped out and then were beheaded? So before you get all bent out of shape because some naked dude had a dog collar put around his neck, show a little respect for the 99.99% of the men and women who are there fighting with honor in that hell hole.

Nice post....something I've wondered about often....had I been a German during the 1930's and early 40's or a young man in an German occupied country, would I have stood up to the Nazis or would I have gown with the flow. So easy to say "oh, I would have done this or that" but you never know for sure unless you've been there.
That being said, I do believe those who have have left the JW's, esp. those who were raised as one, do posess a certain courage not common place among men.

Actually Blueblades, we (Americans) killed some people at Abu Ghraib in much more slow, painful, and torturous ways than cutting someone's head off.

Quite likely true, now. But who started down that path? Jessica Lynch and several other captured Americans were treated quite humanely. Americans steamrolled the Iraqi people and tortured and killed detainees. We've killed thousands of innocent Iraqi's. Our Attorney General called the Geneva Conventions "quaint". What is Iraqi for "karma is a bitch"? -

Amen! Its a great article...
Although most Canadians either do not realize it or would not admit to it, the only reason Canada is as safe and prosperous as it is is b/c of our proximity to the US. Canadians like to criticize the US, and we pretend we are more "moral", and more understanding of the world, than Americans are. And yet, we don't mind the economic benefits that come from having the US are leading importer and exporter. We don't mind enjoying American movies and TV shows. We don't mind vacationing in Florida whenever we see fit. Further, even though we said no to joint missile defence, we wouldn't mind it at all, God Forbid, if the US came to our rescue should we be targetted by North Korean missiles, or missiles from anywhere for that matter. No country is perfect, and in Canada-US relations, the US will naturally always have the upper hand. But thank God for America, b/c without it we as Canadians would be much more vulnerable, much less secure, and much less prosperous than we are today.

Or the three Blackwater Security agents (i.e. former U.S. Navy Seals) who were burned alive, dragged through the streets of Baghdad, and hung from a bridge.

If Canada was invaded tommorrow, America would be right there to defend her. Let the Canadians say what they want to about Americans, most of us are a pretty decent sort of people.
