Is anyone familiar with New Age religion?

My boss called me this morning and said his 19year old cousin has taken off. She only left a note saying she is joining a New Age religion. She told them not to look for her, she won't be back, and they can do what ever they want with her things, as she won't ever need them.

The police won't do anything because she is an adult. They don't even know where to start to look for her.

My boss called me because he knows I research religions, especially cult type ones. I told him I'd ask my friends and find out what I could...So here I am.

    Anyone know anything about them?

    Thanks,

    lisa

Your boss must be beside himself about this. Quite a few of those cults have compounds. Maybe he could go to the school or college that the girl attended to see which cults had a presence there. Also, he could contact all of the girl's friends about this. There must be some leads.

The phrase "new age" religion can cover a lot of different religions. She needs to find out exactly which one before anything can be done. Although, since her cousin is an adult, I don't think she can do too much about it.

I don't think that all new age religions are cults, but I do think that most of them are not based on any sort of reality. Seems to me that most of my friends who call themselves "new agers" are idealistic people who have done too many drugs.

Normally, when I hear the term "New Age religion" it is not one religion, but more often description of religions or philophies that are not Christian. If one has taken the term "New age" on, I would bet there is some link to cult-like behavior. Anyone, that is what I know on the subject.

Any religion has the propensity to become a cult.

Any religion has the propensity to become a cult. Well put. And if I may elaborate, Any cult has the propensity to become a religion.

You might visit Rick Ross's website to browse up on the subject. The situation sounds like a number of well known groups but it could also be a small group that is under the radar. It would be very useful if your boss could find out the name of the group. then a web search might reveal all sorts of useful info. I would also check with law enforcement to see if they have any info on the group, group's members/leaders.

while being over 18 does limit some of the potential actions your boss can take it doesn't completely preclude everything. your boss could involve law enforcement if there is reason to question how willingly she has gone with the group or whether she might be subject to duress, intimidation, force, threats, etc. finding out her location and some info about the group, might at least enable your boss to arrange for a welfare check by the local authorities on her (which he could probably accompany them if he arranged it).

As an alternative, it may be possible to file in court to get a court order of examination to determine whether she is mentally competent. There are lots of hoops to jump through to get the order but if successful, that might at least lead again to an interview and examination by a professional - giving again an opportunity to intervene.

Should he manage to meet with her, in no way, should your Boss try to kidnap her or keep her some place against her will, etc. the way the old deprogrammers used to do as that would lead to bigger problems for him including possibly being criminal.

best of luck. let us know how this situation turned out...

Thanks you guys, you've given me several good suggestions and questions. My boss' niece is from West Virginia. He said they believe the niece is either in NY or PA.

After a little reserarch I've found that New Agers be anything. Like this:

The term “New Age” is used herein as an umbrella term to describe organizations which seem to exhibit one or more of the following beliefs: (1) All is one, all reality is part of the whole; (2) Everything is God and God is everything; (3) Man is God or a part of God; (4) Man never dies, but continues to live through reincarnation; (5) Man can create his own reality and/or values through transformed consciousness or altered states of consciousness.

    and this:

New Age is not new ... it is a modern revival of ancient religious traditions, along with a potpourri of influences: Eastern mysticism, modern philosophy and psychology, science and science fiction, and the counterculture of the 50s and 60s. "... So here we are in the New Age, a combination of spirituality and superstition, fad and farce, about which the only thing certain is that it is not new. Nobody seems to know exactly where the term came from, but it has been around for several decades or more, and many elements of the New Age, like faith healing, fortune-telling and transmigration of souls, go back for centuries."

It is a religious movement that is centered in SELF- all you need is within - with no defined order of sin, repentance or salvation! You become your own god! The people worship the god of forces and promote The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus Christ

Good grief...she just may be a teenager trying to get away from home for some reason. Or she could be in some deep do-do.

I'll see what else I can find out and get back to you all.

    Lisa
