Thanks guys for your support. I have been crying all morning. I truly loved this cat. When I first got him he was living in the street. It turns out he was allergic to flea bites (some animals are) and most of his hair fell out. He looked horrible and I could not believe he was only a year old. Anyway, I took him in against my hubby's wishes because he looked so bad - fixed him up and cared for him for almost 15 years.

My kids always had him around, they are 11 and 13.

The last few years we have spent a considerable amount of money - about $3,500 to try to keep his diabetes regulated and his kidney failure at bay. 6 months ago he got a lot worse with his renal failure and started requiring sub-cutaneous fluid put thru an IV needle into his back every other day. It is not only work but an expense. At first I was going to put him down but the kids were so upset, so I found a supplier online to get the fluids and needles cheaper and started the therapy at home. I told the kids he will not live that much longer. My friends and family thought I was crazy to even do this therapy. But I am a Nurse Ass't so needles do not bother me.

Anyway, we knew he would die soon but it happened so fast. I think his sugar went very low or too high and it hit him suddenly. My son was sick last night (he has asthma bad as well as my daughter) and I was so busy caring for him - I did not notice that the cat was not in his bed where he normally was. (we set up a bed in the living room with his food and litter close by since he was so sick). I searched the house and found him hiding behind the sofa. He was far gone by then, he was covered in excerement and lethargic. I figured it was his sugar but by the time I treated him, he started convulsions and by then I knew even if they brought him back, he would probably have brain damage. And I had already told the VET that I would not treat him anymore if it came down to it for not only the expense but the level of care he needed and his age. We have not been able to go away for the weekend because no one else will care for the cat and give him needles. Also, I felt bad sticking him with up to three needles a day. So my hubby brought him in - he did not gain consciousness and they put him to sleep at 12:30 am. this morning.

My kids were up crying until around 5 am. Me too. But I know I gave him good care.

BTW - my kids both have asthma and severe allergies they developed over the last few years. I don't work anymore outside the home because they require a lot of care and are sick a lot. And the DR. said not to get anymore animals. They seemed to tolerate Oreo since he was around since birth but other people's animals really upset their allergies and asthma. So we really cannot get anymore pets. I have a feeling the kids will feel better too once the cat hair is all gone in a few weeks.

    Thanks again everyone, Lilly

So sorry about your loss--pets are just another member of the family. I love my kitty cat, Baxter. But if anything should happen to him--I would run out and get another one because the house just isn't a home without a family pet. Hope your kids are feeling better soon--have you thought about getting them a pet that doesn't have fur or hair? Maybe a turtle or something like that?

Oh Honey, I am so very sorry to hear about your loss.

I know how you feel, I remember the day my little dog Cubby when he died. I still can't talk about it, even after 10 years it is still too hard.

Once, I tried to tell my husband, but I couldn't explain what happened with out crying.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

Thanks for the advice Love2be, I think I will wait a while and then talk to my brother. He is a store manager for petco and maybe he can suggest a good pet like a turtle or lizard or something like that. Good idea. I will let the kids grieve for now and then maybe in a few months we can talk about a new pet. Lilly

I had to put one of my cats to sleep a few weeks ago. Its a hard thing to do. It sounds like Oreo had a great run though and the care you gave him toward the end was incredible. My hat is off to you. Oreo was a very lucky cat.

You did your best for him - many folks give up on their pets as soon as they learn that costly treatment will be needed to prolong life, you gave him a good 'extra innings'

So sorry to hear about your kitty lil. I had a cat that lived to be 17, but he had cancer and had a urinary blockage (his second) and we had to put him down. Even though I was married and out of the house it was still heartbreaking. Same when I had to put my dog down (freak accident where he broke his back). They truly are members of the family and deserve to be mourned.

Give yourself time, see how the children are (re their allergies/asthma etc) before you make any decisions on another pet. There are some dogs that don't seem to bother people with allergies - maybe you could look into that if you decide to get something else. Our neighbours child has bad asthma and allergies and they have a miniture schnauzer (so did another friend of mine whos son had allergies).

Losing our dog just left too big a hole in our lives, and after about two months we went to the pound and adopted another dog. Then afew months after that we went back to the pound and got another one!! I'd have more - but hubby said two was enough.

Take care, give the kids extra hugs, and yourself too!!

    BB
