Yes, I remember when people used to sing from their heart--whether they were good or not! I was also in one of the orchestras and I really enjoyed it. I met people from all over the circuit that I would have never met otherwise. Those were the ones with personality!

Yeah we had a conductor when I was very young that was at all the circuit and districts.

Really Blondie? Did it help? Yes, yes, yes!!! We had a baby grand piano and beautifully playing sisters. Out it had to go and people were pissed, but followed what "mother" said. Then out came the taped music. UGH!! Very little umph from everyone and then we'd get scolded. And made to feel guilty because we weren't singing loud and singing is part of our worship brothers and sisters. They'd have us stop and refer to the back inside cover w/the Israelites w/their mouths gaping wide open. "This is how we should be doing our singing." Elder would say. And then we'd start up again and elder would stand back from the mic. For all I knew he was lip synching! I, too, missed the orchestra at the CAs and DAs. It was never the same; went the way of the picnics and get togethers. Juni

No, juni, because he had as much rhythm and musicality as a rock. But he had spiritual qualifications. He is now a CO.

    I remember the piano.
    I remember fondly, the pianist.
    As for the singing,
I remember wishing we had a choir.

oh yeah........I remember those days well!!!

I was able to play my flute at the meetings while the sister played piano.......Everybody enjoyed that!

I also missed playing in the orchestras for the circuit and district conventions.........Had to quit band to get baptized (had a great music scholarship I couldn't use)...so when they stopped the orchestras it upset me a lot, as that was the only time I could use my musical skills.

Those were the days, indeed. I still remember that piano in the corner of my first KH, & the older sister who played it. Those arthritic fingers could really fly...

Yes I remember when they played the piano for meetings and also for weddings. There was two older sisters who took great pride in playing and they would play the piano in a very dramatic and flamboyant way. It was great watching them. It sort of put you in the rhythm and feeling of singing the song. Then I remember that it was discouraged from the" powers that be" because they felt it was putting them on a pedestal or making too much of their talents or some bogus way of thinking. I remember the sister feeling put out and sad because she really enjoyed leading the congregation in song..The org really likes to squash all dreams, or anything that makes you feel a little bit better about yourself..

When my family moved to a new congregation around 1990, the new cong. had an upright and a little grandma organ (the ones that you could add a samba beat etc etc). There was a sister that would play the piano, but she was old and it didn't last long. Soon enough both of the instruments vanished.

I never understood why they had an organ. True organ music is made for an organ or harpsichord. Just like piano music can be played usually on piano or guitar (if there are chords). I had a long lecture on this by someone that was a professor of Baroque music. Or as I called it, broke music because you really can't make a living with a degree in it. HAHA!
